Special CPD event honors retiring Gary Roy and his family By Linda Waggener Columbia City Police Department Chief Jason Cross thanked retiring Sergeant Gary Roy for his years of dedicated service at a dinner in his honor Tuesday, August 27, 2019. He said, "Gary and I have laughed together, cried together and bled together - and there was never a moment we didn't have each other's backs." Mayor Pam Hoots and the City staff shared, "Tonight was a night to celebrate great friendships, great memories and a well deserved retirement. Gary Roy retired earlier in the month from the Columbia Police Department after 20 years of service in Columbia and Russell County. Many of Gary’s dearest friends, past and present co-workers and family gave recollections of Gary’s career, his great character, ability to always lighten the mood and most of all his selfless service to community." Cross told the young officers just coming on board to, "Take this moment and know that you have retirement to look forward to, stay safe and know that you are part of a family that always has your back, no matter what." Speakers from CPD and also from the Russell County Sheriff's Office where he first worked in law enforcement shared stories that could be told to the full house and mentioned a few they would not share publicly. Hands went up all over the audience when former Columbia Police Chief Mark Harris said, "raise your hand if you been got by Gary Roy!" He said Gary is the main member of the department who always kept everyone laughing - but as funny as he is, he was always serious as an officer at work, and one who had a big heart for people in need." The overall message from all speakers was, "Congratulations, good job, and enjoy your retirement!" This story was posted on 2019-08-28 09:55:45
