Adair School Board meets - over 2,600 students are enrolled By Linda Waggener The Adair County Board of Education met in regular session Thursday, August 22, 2019. FFA students led the pledge of Allegiance to open the meeting. Superintendent Pamela Stephens commended them on their success and wished them well in upcoming competition. She noted that the School Board meeting came only days after the semester start and it was already very busy with the first football game the next evening in Russell County and the annual Mark Twain Marching Band Festival on Saturday. There is an overflow in kindergarten, according to Dr. Stephens, and a teacher position has been posted. Selection will be made after the Labor Day holiday. There are over 2,600 students in the Adair Public School District to date. ACPC has 561 students enrolled, ACES Has 587 students, ACMS has 634 students, the high school has 798 students, and AYDC has 27 enrolled. In public comments, a mother appealed to the board on her son's behalf. She asked that he be protected from discrimination and stereotyping. She will next have the option to go through the five-step process that will take her points through personnel reviews to a conclusion. Board chair Lisa Burton told the parent that everything would be done that was possible on behalf of the student. The board approved payment for textbooks for Adair County students who attend the Gatton Academy at Western Kentucky University. Two students are attending now from Adair County. The motion passed to accept the 2019 Adair County local planning committee members and the Board, having to add one Board member, elected Lisa Burton to serve on the committee which works with planning in the school district, especially with building needs. She will join the following people who serve at present: Dr. Pamela Stephens, David Jones, Steve Turner, Joe Flowers, Steve Burton, Leslie Wade, Dana King, Debbie Bradshaw, Pam Phipps, Judy Kotter, Alma Rich, Sarah Antle, Aaron LaBarge, Troy Young, Susan Peck, Wes Stephens, Terry Partin, Darrell Overstreet and Brian Walker. The board also approved the tax rates for 2019-2020, electing to have no change from last year's rates. This story was posted on 2019-08-26 05:04:30
