LWC Volleyball opens 2019 season against Asbury

By Chris Coombs

First-year head coach Jerry Forbes and the No. 9-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team begin their 2019 campaign as they host Asbury (KY) on Tuesday night. First serve is slated for 6pmCT at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY.

Last season, the Blue Raiders made an appearance in the NAIA National Championship quarterfinals before falling to Midland (Neb.). Lindsey Wilson swept the Mid-South Conference regular-season and tournament titles in 2018 and ended the season with a 33-4 record.

For the fourth year in a row, Lindsey Wilson was selected as the favorite to win the MSC championship. Coming into the season, the Blue Raiders return six players who have match experience in an LWC uniform while adding seven new players to the mix.

Spearheading the returners is Elly Burke who was named an NAIA Third Team All-American last year. The senior currently ranks in the programs top-10 in career kills, hitting percentage, assists and assists per set. Burke averaged 2.3 kills per set last season for 288 total kills.

Asbury went 20-14 last season as they return All-Conference First Team selection Lizzy Rempel who recorded a team-high 471 kills last year. The Eagles showcase a lot of experience as their roster features five seniors and eight upperclassmen.

The Blue Raiders are 20-2 all-time against Asbury as they manage a perfect 10-0 record against the Eagles in the confines of Biggers Sports Center. The home venue of the Blue Raiders is a tough place for opposing teams as LWC currently boasts 73 consecutive wins on their home court.
