Breeding Fire Department receives search dog donation By Brandon Harvey, Captain The Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department recently received a search dog donation from a local kennel. Grandview Labradors located near Columbia graciously donated the 7-week-old pup. We reached out to Grandview Labradors back in the Spring, owner Wesley Irvin decided to donate a Male Silver Labrador pup to the department. With the donation of the pup, we plan to have him certified by the fall of 2020. The search dog will be certified by Kentucky Emergency Management standards, this is an annual certification to maintain. Adair County is 406 square miles, made up of various types of terrains, our county is one of the largest counties in South Central Kentucky. Anything we can use to aid in assisting with searches provides a better chance of success in finding the person(s). Having a search dog can provide a positive outcome by reuniting missing / lost family / overdue members back to their families quickly. The Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department established a Technical Rescue Team in 2008 and has been providing rescue services such as rope rescue, swift water rescue, grain bin rescue, search and rescue and dive rescue to the citizens of Adair County. The Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department has received other donations such as formal search dog training, valued more than $3,500. We have also received an insulated doghouse and we are also working with a local vet to set up animal care. One week ago, we reached out to the community on Facebook to assist in naming our search dog. We were overwhelmed by community support and comments. This past Tuesday night at training we let members of the department vote on the names that were provided by community members. The department members chose the name "Sparky G". We are pleased with the outcome of this project; in the future we plan to host events educating the public further about benefits of a Search & Rescue dog. Mike Keltner, Adair County Emergency Management Director says, "Having a search dog that is committed only to looking for missing persons will provide our communities an advantage when it comes to missing, lost or overdue persons". The Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department has applied for other grants to aid in Search & Rescue Operations. The entire department would like to say "Thank You" to Grandview Labradors and all the other individuals / business who wish to remain anonymous for their donations to this program.
