KSP arrest two in Wellnitz Case - Kentucky

Kentucky State Police made two arrests last night, in Lexington, KY, in the ten-year-old triple murder of Dr. Joseph Wellnitz, his wife Beth, and son, Dennis of Columbia, according to Trooper Duane Barnett of the Kentucky State Police Post 15 in Columbia. Updated: 2003-03-01

The arrests followed a continued investigation. The murders were committed at the family's residence next to the Wellnitz Veterinary Clinic on Conover Lane just outside Columbia on February 26, 1993.

Arrested were Margaret Anne (Wellnitz) Appleton, 28, and William Harry Meese, 30. Appleton, daughter of the victims, was arrested at her residence at 449 North Limestone in Lexington. She is lodged in the Adair County Jail.

Meece has been lodged in the Fayette Detention Center. Detective Sergeant Dennis Benningfield, Trooper David Smith and Sergeant Tracy Collins of the Frankfort KSP Post assisted in these arrests.

Appleton is charged with complicity to murder, complicity to robbery, first; and complicity to burglary, first.

Meece has been charged with three counts of murder, burglary, first; and robbery, first.

The story is spreading via AP news sources, although few offer additional information at this point, and State Police have not yet elaborated on the reasons for the arrests or the timing. Stories are running at WAVE3, ABC News, and even as far away as The Guardian in England.

Update 2003-03-01: The Lexington Herald has run a slightly more informative piece. Still no menion of the new evidence that led to the arrest, but quite a bit of background information.
