Wilson School was different from the other schools I knew about, like Bird Ridge, and Firkin and later Rocky Hill. The Wilson School had two rooms and the other three schools had only one room, all eight classes taught by the same teacher.

I attended Wilson and Rocky Hill and then graduated at Firkin School, located near Harrods Fork on Highway 61 between Sparksville and Breeding.

In later years I began research of my family roots and found information about great aunts and uncles attending the Wilson School. I became interested in the history of the school because of its name and the fact that I was born and lived on the same road, near the junction of KY 61 and KY 768.

I remembered that Mr. Brooks Coomer, an Adair County High School Principal, taught school there at one time. I sent a request for any information he might share about the history of the school, such as how it got its name and when it was established and closed, etc.

Here is Mr. Coomer's reply in part:

I am not certain how the Wilson School got it name but a logical answer would be because my Uncle Frank Wilson lived just beyond the school house and possibly the ground was given to have a school in the community. Also Garlin and Josh Wilson lived in the vicinity.

In 1948, it was made a two-room school. My sister taught the lower grades and I taught the upper grades from 1948 to 1951. I would say it remained as a school until 1953 when it was closed and the students went to the old Breeding Elementary School. This school was closed in 1963 and now students attend the present Sparksville Grade Center at the junction of KY 61 and KY 768.

Note: Frank, Garlin and Josh Wilson were brothers. Joshua Josh Wilson was my grandfather. Some of their sisters and family members lived in the vicinity as well. Only one of the four homes of which I lived in on that then gravel road are there today.
