Flatwoods store is a popular spot

Phyllis Darnell Curry took a break from managing and cooking at her country store to share her thoughts, After working for years in a factory and traveling all over the country, meeting different people, I knew I would enjoy having a business of my own where I could sit down and talk about everyday life. Flatwoods Grocery turned out to be that place, just a little piece down the road from where Phyllis grew up.

Flatwoods Grocery and Grill is owned by Phyllis and her husband Clifton Curry. Their son, Dewayne, operates Currys Pawn Shop in the back of the building. Daughter Tammy also helps some on Saturdays. The family business is located six miles south of Columbia on Highway 61.

The store was originally built in 1985 by Greg and Perry Reeder, called Reeders Grocery. It sold to Junior Stotts in 1991 and became Flatwoods Grocery, named for the community it is located in. Later that year he sold to Arlis Turner. The currys opportunity came then, when the former owner decided to sell the store. With lots of prayer and talking to people who were in business, Phyllis said, she decided to buy it. She has added the grill and the store is now a regular hot spot for breakfast and lunch in that area of the county.

God has brought us so many good customers and we have enjoyed them all so much. We have met people from all over the world. Some we couldnt even understand their language but managed to send them off with a smile even if it wasnt what they ordered. We also have couples that visit with us on weekends from Indiana. We appreciate them all so much.

Regretfully, we have lost a lot of dear people through death, including regulars Jack Patton and Mark Scott, but she says, we still get together with their families and remember the good old days. The menu for breakfast offers everything from Julies oatmeal, to John Walkers BLT with no crust on the bread, jelly and tenderloin, to J.M.s pancakes. Saturdays, a group of friends from Columbia come for special chocolate gravy with their country biscuits. At lunch the store offers another array of specialties in addition to its standard sandwich line, including Jimmy Relifords double-deluxe fried bologna sandwich on wheat, and cooked tuna as Steve calls it, which is tuna on toast, and then theres Jeremys mini-burgers.We have had great employees, Phyllis says, they have been a blessing. Ms. Frances, as the kids call her, has been with us since the beginning. She and I have been together for so long we can almost read each others minds.

The Curry family would like to thank all their customers, friends and family and wish Gods blessings to each and everyone in the New Year.
