CU Wellness Center to include walking track, smoothie bar By Ariel C. Emberton, student news writer, Office of University Communications CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University's Betty Dobbins Heilman Student Wellness Center is set to open following the start of the fall semester, according to Otto Tennant, senior vice president for operations and administration (COO). The multi-level facility is over 20,000 square feet and will feature a variety of additions for students, faculty, staff and coaches to enjoy. Accessible from North Hoskins Avenue, the main level will include a free weights floor with other additional workout machines. Across from this will be the new Simple Blends Smoothie Bar. The bar will feature smoothies, wraps, coffee and other snack items. Students who live on campus will be able to use their Clawz Cash at the smoothie bar if they desire. On the opposite end of the facility, cardio machines will be set up facing Columbia Avenue. "People will be able to see what is going on outside while working out inside," Tennant said. The main level will also feature a walking track that goes all the way around the edge and looks down to the basketball court of the lower level. The track will have different lanes for those who want to walk, jog or run. The lower level will contain a collegiate basketball court with a pull across wall in order for the court to be separated for half-court games or class privacy. There will also be two additional multi-purpose rooms available for use and restrooms on the lower level. There will not be shower facilities in the building. Televisions will be scattered throughout the building for anyone to use. The smoothie bar will be open to the public but all other sections of the wellness center will be for Campbellsville University student, faculty, staff and coaches use only. "Obviously it's for the students, and we want it to be a safe and inviting place for people to come," Tennant said. Inside the wellness center will be a glass case including items of sentimental value to Betty Dobbins Heilman, for whom the building is named. A plaque will also be placed inside the facility accompanied by a portrait of Heilman who died in 2013. She was a 1948 graduate of Campbellsville Junior College. Freddie Hilpp was the building contractor, and Kelly Caven is the director of the wellness center. Hours for the building will be from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Friday. Hours for the weekend have not been determined. Tennant said he is looking forward to the addition of the building and what it will bring to the students at Campbellsville University. Campbellsville University is a widely-acclaimed Kentucky-based Christian university with more than 12,000 students offering over 100 programs of study including Ph.D., master, baccalaureate, associate, pre-professional and certification programs. The university has Kentucky based off-campus centers in Louisville, Harrodsburg, Somerset, Hodgenville and Liberty with instructional sites in Elizabethtown, Owensboro and Summersville. Out-of-state centers include two in California at Los Angeles and Lathrop, located in the San Francisco Bay region. The website for complete information is www.campbellsville.edu.
