Walker Pleads Innocent; Adair Students Protest Death Penalty

Blake Walker entered a plea of innocent in Adair County Circuit Court on January 28, 2003. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for February 25, and the trial is scheduled to begin on November 3, 2003. (regional coverage: WKTY, Lexington Herald-Leader).

The Courier-Journal 's report also covers the student protest that took place outside the Adair County Courthouse, where classmates of Brian Walker displayed signs asking drivers to honk to show that they were against the death penalty for juveniles.

In addition to the protest, petitions and letters have been written supporting leniency for Walker, who will be tried as an adult and could face the death penalty.

Adair Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Wright's decision about pursuing the death penalty--which he says he will make before the February 25h court date--may bring more national attention to this case, as more and more states, including Illinois, Maryland, and Texas, grapple with the issues surrounding capital punishment.
