Trail Town requested to be made part of City P&R By Linda Waggener The subject of Trail Town came up at the July City Council meeting. Ellen Zornes, Chair of the Trail Town program that has been developed in Adair County, will be invited to bring specifics at the August City Council meeting to explore the request that the local Trail Town initiative be adopted into the City Parks & Recreation Department. Trail Towns is a designation for communities that have a trail system or a river or water area used for canoeing and kayaking. It also allows for trails to be developed and used for walking, biking, horseback riding, canoeing and kayaking and off road riding. Some of the outdoor attractions that are offered in the Columbia area include 25 miles of paddling on Russell Creek, which flows into the Green River; Green River Lake; and Lindsey Wilson College, which has supported award-winning cycling teams. Once a community has received the Trail Town certification which Columbia/Adair County now has, the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, the Department of Travel and Tourism and Office of Adventure Tourism will help promote and market these communities and the services being offered. They will be highlighted on maps, websites, visitors' guides and other state promotional material. The Council meeting will be held on the first Monday, August 5, 2019 at 6pmCT in City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, and the public is welcome.
