Baseball in the way-back By Mike Watson Baseball became popular during the Civil War era and our interest has never waned. There was a time when every community in Adair County fielded a team. Teams traveled to play, and occasionally played out-of-the-county teams in surrounding areas. This popularity continued into the 1950s. Perhaps television, easier modes of travel, and other entertainment caused the decline in local teams. Here is a short item from the Adair County News, September 7, 1898: "The Gradyville second nine baseball team played the Breeding team last Sunday afternoon. The score was 19 to 3 in favor of Gradyville. The Breeding boys should practice up before they send us another challenge." --Gradyville correspondent to the NewsDoes any reader have photographs of an old ball team they'd share with us on ColumbiaMagazine? --MW This story was posted on 2019-06-27 08:44:12
