Adair School Board June 2019 meeting - Report

By Linda Waggener

The Adair County School Board held its June meeting, preparing for the 2019/2020 school year.

Two main highlights of the meeting came at the beginning and at the close of the meeting.

First, opening the meeting leading the Pledge of Allegence were 2018 graduate Nick Taylor and senior Clayton Janes who have received their pilots licenses through the ACHS aerospace CTE program.

And as the meeting business was concluded, the Board gave their positive evaluation and renewal decision to Superintendent Dr. Pamela Stephens for another year.

The letter from the Board Members reads:

"Evaluation of the Superintendent Summary Report
Adair County Board of Education June 20, 2019

The Adair County Board of Education has completed the annual evaluation of Dr. Stephens for the 2018/2019 school year. The past year has been a positive one for our school system. The five school board members have worked closely with Dr. Stephens during their time on the board and have bass their evaluations on those experiences.

Dr. Stephens received a rating of 3.4 in Strategic Leadership, 3.6 in Instructional Leadership, 3.0 in Cultural Leadership, 4.0 in Human Resource Leadership, 4.0 in Managerial Leadership, 3.8 in Collaborative Leadership, and 3.8 in Influential Leadership.

This is the first evaluation for Dr. Stephens. She started with our school district as the interim superintendent and was later hired for the official position.

We commend her for the job she has already done and look forward to working with her in the next school year to see what we can accomplish together. We are extremely proud of the interest she has shown to our students, faculty and staff, the board and our community. Thanks again for a job well done."

The five board members are Troy Grider, Daniel Adams, Lisa Burton (Chair), Jonathan Gaskins, and Terry Harvey.

David Taylor and his wife Kristi proudly stood with their son, Nick, at the June School Board meeting where the high school's Aerospace CTE program was highlighted. Both Nick, a 2018 graduate, and senior Clayton Janes have received their pilots licenses after going through the program.

David, Allen and Nelda Taylor's son, remembered his own days at ACHS. He said he has a hard time believing that 30 years have passed since then - however their upcoming 30 year class reunion is proof that it has. He commented that he enjoys it when his former ACHS classmate, Pen Waggener, runs one of his Dad Ed's Around Adair columns from the 70s and 80s. He remembers hearing about many of those happenings at the time.

Interestingly, both David and Pen grew up to raise sons of their own who would choose the Aerospace programs at their respective high schools in Adair and Shelby Counties and cross paths at Eastern Kentucky University where pilots are being trained as fast as possible to address the shortage of men and women who can fill that job.
