LWC Softball stays alive in NAIA World Series

By Chris Wells

Springfield, MO - Hannah Epperson hurled a complete-game shutout to lead Lindsey Wilson softball to a 2-0 win over Vanguard (CA) in an elimination game tonight at the NAIA World Series at Killian Softball Stadium.

The fifth-seeded Blue Raiders advance to face seventh-seeded Mobile (AL) at 4pmCT on Saturday. No. 9-seed Vanguard's season ends with a 46-13 record.

Epperson was sensational in the circle, allowing just three hits and five baserunners all night. She retired six straight batters twice during the game and allowed a baserunner to reach second base just once. Epperson -- who improves to 15-1 on the season -- struck out two en route to her eighth complete game and sixth shutout of the season.

The Lindsey Wilson offense missed some scoring opportunities but did enough to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament. The Blue Raiders stranded eighth baserunners on the night.

Jaydee Boursaw put the Blue Raiders on the board with an RBI infield single in the third inning to give Lindsey Wilson the 1-0 lead.

Desiree Chang and Callum Pilgrim led off the third with back-to-back hits. Following a fielder's choice and a pop out, Boursaw hit a ball in the hole at shortstop to drive home Chang for the 1-0 lead. The RBI is Boursaw's 46th of the season.

Chang, Pilgrim, and Boursaw were three of seven different Blue Raiders with a hit in the game.

Brenna Wethington provided the longest hit of the night in the fourth inning to double the Blue Raider lead. Getting her first start of the season, Wethington blasted her first career home run over the left-centerfield fence to extend the Blue Raiders lead to 2-0.

Epperson had her only stressful inning of the night in the fifth inning.

After retiring the first two batters, Lindsey Gilmore and Ariana Huffman each singled up the middle to give the Lions multiple baserunners for the first time in the game. Cassie Balswick followed with a deep drive to center field, but Pilgrim -- an MSC Gold Glove outfielder this season -- chased down the drive to end the inning and help post another zero on the scoreboard.

The fifth-inning hits would be the last Epperson would surrender. She retired seven of the last eight batters she faced in the game -- the lone baserunner was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning.

With Epperson's outing, Lindsey Wilson pitching has not allowed an earned run in 14 innings during the World Series.

Cassie Matlock, Kalli Harris, and Samantha Luckett also added a hit in the game for the Blue Raider offense that outhit the Lions 7-3.

Kolbi Tonini suffered the loss for Vanguard. She allowed both runs on seven hits in 5-2/3 innings of work.

Lindsey Wilson faces Mobile -- who fell to second-seeded Marian (Ind.) today 2-1 -- at 4pmCT on Saturday.
