Grand View upsets LWC Softball 5-1 By Chris Wells The Lindsey Wilson softball team's offense struggled in a 5-1 loss on Tuesday to third-seeded Grand View (IA) at the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round Columbia, KY Bracket at Marilyn D. Sparks Park. The Vikings (46-10) advance to the championship game on Wednesday while the top-seeded Blue Raiders fall into the consolation bracket and await the winner of second-seeded USC Beaufort (SC) and fourth-seeded Saint Xavier later this afternoon in an elimination game. Lindsey Wilson (47-3) managed just one run on four hits in the game. The one run matches a season-low for the Blue Raiders. Grand View produced six hits, three of which came in a five-run fifth inning that proved to be the deciding factor in the win. Jillian Belieu provided the big hit in the inning with a grand slam to give the Vikings the 4-0 lead. The homer is her seventh of the season. The Vikings added a fifth run in the inning on an RBI double by Melissa Geis to extend the lead to 5-0. Lindsey Wilson bounced back with a run in the bottom half of the inning but stranded two runners on base in the inning. The Blue Raiders left five runners on base today. Callum Pilgrim led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and later scored on Jaydee Boursaw's RBI single. But that was all the Blue Raiders could push across against Grand View's Libby Yenger, who picked up the complete-game win. Yenger allowed just the one run on four hits while striking out four en route to improving to 25-4 on the season. Lindsey Wilson's Annabelle Ramirez suffered her first loss of the season, allowing all five runs on four hits while striking out six in four innings of work. Ramirez slips to 16-1 on the season. Taylor Slade finished the game, throwing three scoreless innings. Cassie Matlock and Makea-Al Kaluau joined Pilgrim and Boursaw with hits in the game for the Blue Raiders. Lexi Merritt, Abby Sutten, Alyx Witt, and Kelsey Winnett also added hits for the Vikings. USC Beaufort and Saint Xavier meet in an elimination game at 1:30pmCT with the winner advancing to face Lindsey Wilson at 4pmCT. The loser is eliminated from the tournament. Grand View is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the tournament. The Vikings await the winner of the consolation bracket at 11amCT on Wednesday. This story was posted on 2019-05-15 05:52:35
