Columbia City Council takes no action in executive session

KU Franchise agreement renewed, possible rate increase in future

By Tiffany Kessler

The agenda for this week's City Council meeting included a motion to enter into executive session, leaving the mayor, county attorney, and council members to privately discuss what was vaguely listed as "deliberations on the future acquisition or sale of real property owned by the City of Columbia".

Not uncommon, however, it does tend to leave many speculating on what the talks are about. Though no action was taken, none could give information pertaining to that portion of the meeting. Mayor Pam Hoots did provide a time frame.

When asked if the topic would become public knowledge within the month, Mayor Hoots responded "Oh yes, I'm hoping so."

KU Franchise Renewed
The council voted unanimously to renew the city's franchise agreement with Kentucky Utilities (KU). The 20-year contract includes an annual fee of 3% with the ability to increase the total annual fee up to 5% at each five year anniversary.

Additional Council Business
John Ford was re-appointed to the Housing Board

Appeal made for action on historic Adair Courthouse
During council member comments, Linda Waggener asked for a group to brainstorm about possibilities of the city partnering with the county to improve the status of the courthouse and what is to come of it. She said Adair Heritage Association had taken surveys and the majority at that time hoped to have it as a usable community center for the public, especially the upstairs courtroom.

All council members were present, including: Craig Dean, Linda Waggener, Dr. Ronald Rogers, Sharon Payne, June Parson, and Mark Harris.

Regular meetings for the Columbia City Council are held the first Monday of each month at 6pmCT located in City Hall, 116 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY. Meetings are open to the public.
