LWC Softball wins over Kentucky Christian and Georgetown By Clayton Barefield Bowling Green, KY - Lindsey Wilson softball secured their place in the Mid-South Conference winner's bracket after opening day one of the tournament with a pair of wins over No. 8 seed Kentucky Christian and No. 4 seed Georgetown (Ky.) from Michael O. Buchanon Park. For the day, the Blue Raiders (44-2) outhit their opponents 19-16. Lindsey Wilson opened the tournament with a 9-3 victory over Kentucky Christian before defeating Georgetown in a close 2-1 victory. Lindsey Wilson advances to the winner's bracket final on Sunday against the winner of No. 2 seed Campbellsville and No. 7 seed Shawnee State (Ohio) at NoonCT at Buchanon Park, Nashville Rd., Bowling Green, KY. GAME 1 (7 Innings): Lindsey Wilson 9, Kentucky Christian 3 The Blue Raiders outhit the Knights (22-30) 13-9 in the game. LWC was led offensively by Cassie Matlock who notched three hits. Zakiya Sizemore and Kalli Harris were just behind with a tally of two hits each. A group of three Blue Raiders managed to record two RBI's. The Knights struck first with one run in the opening inning. Lindsey Wilson answered with two runs of their own to take the lead in the bottom half of the first. Sizemore was the first to connect for LWC with a single. Matlock followed that up with a triple to deep right-field to push Sizemore in. Matlock managed to cross the plate after a 6-3 ground out. After a scoreless second and a runner left on base for LWC, Kentucky Christian grabbed back a run in the third to tie the game at two apiece. Lindsey Wilson took control of the score after notching four runs on six hits in the bottom half of the inning. After another Sizemore single, Matlock followed that up with yet another RBI-triple to give the Blue Raiders the one run advantage. Jaydee Boursaw would then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Matlock to increase the lead to two runs. Lindsey Wilson would tag on two more runs off of two RBI-singles to close out the inning. The Blue Raiders held the Knights scoreless in the top of the fourth after one hit and two left on base. Makea-Al Kaluau boosted the Lindsey Wilson lead to six with a double that knocked in two runs. After a Desiree Chang triple, Callum Pilgrim managed to connect for an RBI-double in the bottom of the fifth to increase the Blue Raider lead to 9-2. Kentucky Christian managed to connect for a double and then an RBI-Single adding a run to make the score 9-3 in the sixth. Lindsey Wilson managed to reach base on two errors and a pair of fielder's choices but could not produce any more offense to close the game with the six-run lead. Taylor Slade was the winning pitcher for the Blue Raiders, throwing for six innings. Slade recorded eight strikeouts and only two walks during her time in the circle. Abby Whelan closed out the game for LWC, pitching for the final inning. GAME 2 (7 Innings): Lindsey Wilson 2, Georgetown 1 Game two was a less offensive affair for Lindsey Wilson as they were held to only six hits and two runs while Georgetown (26-20) managed to outhit the Blue Raiders with seven hits. Six different Blue Raiders managed to record a hit for the game. Pilgrim and Matlock both knocked in runs to lead the LWC batting efforts. Lindsey Wilson scored first in the bottom of the first with Pilgrim leading off the inning with a walk and ultimately scoring on a double from Matlock. During the second, the Blue Raiders were in threating position with the bases loaded with only one out but the Tigers managed to disarm Lindsey Wilson. Georgetown was unable to get on the board in the fifth after they managed to load the bases with only one out in the inning. The Tigers connected for three consecutive singles before striking out and flying out to extinguish their threating position. Leading off the fifth, Lyric Houston reached on a walk and then advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Pilgrim was able to knock a double to deep-left field bringing Houston home and increasing the Blue Raider lead to two. Georgetown was able to gain a run back in the seventh but Lindsey Wilson kept the Tigers from extending the game. Hannah Epperson recorded the win, pitching six innings. Epperson gave up the seven hits while recording seven strikeouts. Annabelle Ramirez was credited for the save, pitching the final inning. This story was posted on 2019-05-03 21:13:12
