Blue Raiders sweep Campbellsville with late-game heroics

By Christopher Coombs

Campbellsville, KY -. - The No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team used late-game surges to sweep their Mid-South Conference doubleheader with Campbellsville (Ky.) this afternoon at Hord Softball Complex.

Lindsey Wilson would use four runs in the eighth inning of a 5-5 game one to pick up a win as they found themselves trailing in game two 7-5 in the seventh inning before a five run-scoring spurt gave them their second win of the day.

Annabelle Ramirez would see action in the circle in both games for Lindsey Wilson as she came on in relief in game one and got the start in game two.

GAME 1 (8 Innings): Lindsey Wilson 9, Campbellsville 5

The Blue Raiders would need extra innings and strong relief pitching by Ramirez to get the job done in game one as a four-run eighth inning gave LWC a 9-5 victory.

Lindsey Wilson would lead the Tigers 5-4 as they entered the sixth inning but Campbellsville would push a run across home plate to tie the game at five all with one out in the inning. The run brought Ramirez into the circle as she would retire the next five straight Tiger batters into the eighth inning.

With the Blue Raiders at the plate, Lyric Houston would reach base on an error by the third baseman before Callum Pilgrim - batting .460 on the season -- was intentionally walked. Zikiya Sizemore would then give the Blue Raiders a two-run lead when she doubled to deep left field.

Matlock hit an RBI single to center field during the next at-bat to increase the LWC lead to 8-5. Harris then pushed the Blue Raiders final run of the day home when she singled to left.

Ramirez would strikeout the first Tiger batter - her sixth strikeout in eight batters face on the day -- in the bottom half of the inning before a fly out and a groundout ended the game.

Lindsey Wilson would take the lead in the first inning of the game when Jaydee Boursaw singled to score Pilgrim, who singled to lead off the game. Campbellsville managed a 3-1 lead in the game with two solo home runs in the third inning and another solo shot in the fourth.

LWC leveled the score in the fifth inning as they scored two runs on two hits. The Tigers would hit their fourth solo home run of the game in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead. The Blue Raider did enough from that point on to take game one of the doubleheader.

Ramirez (13-0) picked up the win in the game as she pitched 2-2/3 innings.

GAME 2: Lindsey Wilson 10, Campbellsville 7

The Blue Raiders would strike first in the game as Sizemore hit a solo home run in the first. Campbellsville would return fire as they produced two solo shots off the bats of Payton Blades and Riley Hurst in the bottom half of the inning.

Callum Pilgrim would step up to the plate in the second inning with two outs and the bases loaded. She would smash a grand slam home run to straightaway center, scoring four to give LWC a 5-2 advantage.

The hit moved Pilgrim atop the softball programs all-time leader board for hits in a career as she now has 279 during her four years as a Blue Raider. She moves past Andrea Whelan who donned the Lindsey Wilson uniform from 2012-15.

Campbellsville managed two more solo home runs, getting one in the second and one in the third to cut the LWC advantage to just one at 5-4 as they entered the fourth inning. The Tigers would tie the game at five after they score one run on one hit and a wild pitch.

The Tigers would score for the fifth and sixth consecutive innings in the game as they would take the lead at 7-5 as they entered the seventh and final inning.

Lindsey Wilson put their leadoff runner on base in the final inning but a fielder's choice, a Pilgrim walk and another fielder's choice would put LWC down to their final out with runners on the corners.

Matlock then singled to center to score Chang from third. With runners on first and second Boursaw singled to score Sizemore, a run that tied the game at 7-7. Kalli Harris would then hit a three-run home run to increase the LWC advantage to 10-7.

Campbellsville would put runners on first and second to open the final stanza but the Blue Raiders would get out of the jam to take game two of the doubleheader.

Abby Whelan (6-1) came on in the sixth inning to pick up the win for the Blue Raiders as she allowed just two hits. Ramirez got the start, going five innings and striking out eight batters.

Lindsey Wilson closes out regular season play tomorrow afternoon for a 2pmCT doubleheader against Kentucky Christian in Grayson, Ky., as they close out regular season play.
