Blue Raider Softball takes two from Shawnee State

By Christopher Coombs

The No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team took two games from Mid-South Conference opponent Shawnee State (Ohio) on Friday evening at Sparks Park.

The Blue Raiders cruised in game one, defeating the Bears 9-1 as they recorded four home runs in the game. Game two was a different story as LWC found themselves trailing into the fifth inning but a late surge pushed them to victory.

Cassie Matlock led the way for the Blue Raiders at the plate as she finished the day with four hits and six RBI's. Hannah Epperson (11-1) and Annabelle Ramirez (12-0) pitch complete games for the Blue Raiders as they picked up wins in game one and two, respectively.

The Blue Raiders are set to finish off the weekend series with Shawnee State on Saturday at Marilyn D. Sparks Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY when they play a doubleheader beginning at NoonCT.

Game One (5 Innings): Lindsey Wilson 9, Shawnee State 1

Following a scoreless first inning, Lindsey Wilson exploded for eight runs across the next two innings as they pushed across three in the second and five in the third.

Matlock hit her first home run of the day, this one a solo shot over the right-field fence to open the second. Makea-Al Kaluau would produce a double during the next at-bat before Lyric Houston smashed a two-run home run to left field.

Callum Pilgrim and Kalli Harris would reach base on a walk in the third inning while Jaydee Boursaw managed to reach base on a single to load the bases with one out. Matlock then produced a grand slam to increase the Blue Raider advantage to 7-1.

Kaluau would tack on another home run in the inning to increase the LWC lead even further.

Shawnee State (17-12, 4-10 MSC) would get one run back in the fourth inning when Stacy Trenholm hit a solo home run.

The Blue Raiders ended things early in the fifth inning after Matlock double to right field and was driven in during the next at-bat on a Kaluau single.

Nine of the ten runs scored during the contest were a result of a home run.

Epperson allowed just two hits in the game as she struck out five of the 17 batters she faced.

Game Two (7 Innings): Lindsey Wilson 3, Shawnee State 2

The second game of the doubleheader was a different story for the Blue Raiders as they struggled to produce offense early.

Shawnee State was able to take advantage, scoring two runs on four hits and one Lindsey Wilson error spread across the first and third inning of the game.

Ramirez would take control of the game from her position in the circle as she allowed just one more hit for the contest. She finished the game with ten strikeouts.

The Blue Raiders would finally get things going in the fifth inning as they managed to tie the game at two. Matlock again served as a spark the LWC offense needed as she led off the inning with a solo home run. It was her third of the day and her fourth of the season.

Lauren Lett then leveled the score when she sent one deep over the left field fence later in the inning.

Matlock would reach base to lead off the bottom half of the seventh inning, reaching second base after Shawnee State's left fielder dropped her fly ball. With two outs a Samantha Luckett single was able to drive home Matlock for the decisive run, giving Lindsey Wilson the win.
