LWC Softball sweeps Midway during road doubleheader

By Christopher Coombs

Midway, KY - The No. 8-ranked Lindsey Wilson College softball team left Mid-South Conference play to post a 9-0 shutout and a 9-2 win over Midway (Ky.) on Tuesday afternoon at William G. Clark Memorial Field.

The shutout is the tenth of the season for Lindsey Wilson as they move to 25-1 overall and extend their winning streak to twelve straight games. The Blue Raiders outhit the Eagles (12-18) 28-9 across the two games as reigning MSC Player of the Week Makea-Al Kaluau led the charge with five hits and five RBI's.

Game One: Lindsey Wilson 9, Midway 0

After two scoreless innings, the Blue Raiders were able to break through scoring the first run of the game. Samantha Luckett would drive a home run ball deep over the left field fence to give LWC a 1-0 advantage.

Lindsey Wilson would manage just two more hits through the sixth inning, failing to drive home any more runs. In the home half of the inning, the Eagles would threaten the Blue Raider lead after the first three Midway batters were able to reach base successfully.

Blue Raider starting pitcher Hannah Epperson - who picked up her eighth win of the season - would record the first out of the inning when she was able to strike out the next batter. Taylor Slade would then come on in relief, earning the save after she was able to help the Lindsey Wilson defense get out of the bases loaded jam.

With one out in the inning, LWC managed to get the lead runner out on a fielder's choice at home and would then get the third out when Midway grounded out to the shortstop.

The Lindsey Wilson offense would then put the game away in the seventh inning when they exploded for eight runs on eight hits. Cassie Matlock led off the inning with a single and then scored when Kaluau hit her ninth home run of the season on the first pitch of her at-bat.

Zakiya Sizemore, Luckett and Desiree Chang would then produce three straight singles to load the bases. A wild pitch would advance all base runners one bag as Sizemore was able to score from third, increasing the LWC advantage to 4-0.

Callum Pilgrim then reached base on a fielder's choice that scored Luckett. Lyric Houston would then single to drive home Chang for another Blue Raider run and move Pilgrim to third.

With runners on the corners, Pilgrim was able to score on a groundout to the shortstop before Kaluau drove in the Blue Raiders final two runs of the inning on a double to right field.

Lindsey Wilson would record three straight outs in the bottom half of the inning to close out the game.

Matlock and Kaluau led LWC at the plate with three hits as Kaluau tacked on four RBI's for the contest. Seven different Blue Raiders recorded at least one of the Blue Raiders 13 hits for the game as Epperson allowed six hits in 5-1/3 innings of work and two strikeouts.

Game Two: Lindsey Wilson 9, Midway 2

Lindsey Wilson would carry momentum into game two as they scored multiple runs in the second, third and fourth inning to jump out to a 7-0 lead in the game.

After Kaluau and Lett reach base to lead off the second inning on back-to-back singles, a Luckett sacrifice bunt advanced both into scoring position. Sizemore would then smash a two-RBI double to score the first runs of the game.

In the third inning, LWC managed to tack on two more runs, doing so on two hits and the help of one Midway error.

Luckett led off the fourth inning with a single and would then score when Sizemore drove her home via a double to left field. Sizemore would later score when Houston grounded out later in the inning. Pilgrim would score the final run on a passed ball after she reached base on a single.

Lindsey Wilson would add a few insurance runs in the seventh inning when they were able to push two more runs across the plate on three hits. Luckett, Pilgrim, Harris all recorded singles in the inning as Luckett and Sizemore would go on to score.

Midway would push two runs home in the final inning, scoring their first runs of the day after the Blue Raiders had pushed the Eagles to their final out of the contest. They would score on two hits and two Lindsey Wilson errors in the inning.

Annabelle Ramirez (8-0) went the distance for the Blue Raider in the circle as she recorded nine strikeouts while allowing three hits and no earned runs for the contest.

Blue Raiders return to Mid-South Conference action on Friday and Saturday when they play a four-game series against Georgetown (Ky.). Friday's doubleheader begins at 2pmCT as Saturday's will begin at Noon CT at the Tiger Softball Complex.
