Burkesville awarded $178,536 in TAP funding By Jordan Smith Frankfort, KY - Governor Matt Bevin and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announce $178,536 in Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funds have been awarded to the City of Burkesville in Cumberland County to improve infrastructure for non-drivers in the community. The award will fund upgrades to an existing sidewalk on Burkesville River Street to include handicap accessibility and to construct a new sidewalk with handrails and more than 20 ramps. This project will provide pedestrian access between the town square, senior citizen center, the city park, and scenic Cumberland River. "We are grateful for this significant federal TAP investment to benefit the city of Burkesville," said Gov. Bevin. "Funds from this program enable local communities to implement important transportation projects that increase connectivity for diverse populations, such as non-driving and disabled Kentuckians." TAP is a federally funded reimbursement program administered through the Office of Local Programs in the KYTC's Department of Rural and Municipal Aid. Funding assists communities in funding transportation improvements, such as safe bicycle and pedestrian pathways and/or facilities, safe routes to schools, scenic routes and overlooks and other investments. Projects may be a mix of elements and accessible to the general public or targeted to a broad segment of the general public. This year, 14 projects were awarded funding statewide. "These funds support many Cabinet priorities such as improved safety, increased access and more efficient modes of transportation," said KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. "We're pleased this community will be able to make needed improvements to enhance the quality of life for Kentuckians." Funding for TAP is authorized as a dedicated portion of the Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) funding program under the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, which authorizes federal transportation funding from Fiscal Year 2016-2020.
