ACPC students exchange socks on World Down Syndrome Day

By Laura Marcum

Thursday, March 21, 2019 was World Down Syndrome Day. Down Syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of a third copy of chromosome 21.

Mrs. Jodie Stephens' class, from the Adair County Primary Center, celebrated the day in their classroom by wearing mismatched socks. They started their celebration with a sock exchange.

Mrs. Stephens said, "Each sock was different and unique just like our students. These socks are purposely mismatched to spark interactions with others who may be different than them. Just because things don't match or look the same doesn't mean they are that different. Students were able to trade with their friends to create a pair that makes them happy."

It is interesting to know that people around the world were taking part in this event as well. Read more about World Down Syndrome Day at Wikipedia.
