Letter: Memories of Damron Creek Road Melissa sent this letter of an adventurous visit back home after reading DAY TRIP: wandering Patty Ridge Road in Russell County KY By Melissa Gail Craigmiles I loved your story about Patty Ridge. I grew up on Damron Creek Road at Webbs Crossroads. I was born in Louisville KY, and we live in Clarksville, IN now, but I lived some of my life in Louisville's south end and in Russell Springs, KY at Webb Crossroads at my parents 79 acre farm on Damron Creek. I have been married to James 12 years, and he is from Memphis, TN, and he had never really been to Russell Springs ever before he met me. In early February, 2015, my husband took me to my parent's gravesite at Mt Calvary Church Cemetery on Damron Creek Road, and then we went past our old home of my parents at the top of Damron Creek Hill. We had an old Altima, it was blue, a 1995, and I said, "Honey let's give our old Altima a run over Damron Creek." It had just rained heavily that week, and James said, "Should we drive this old car over Damron Creek," which is usually about ankle deep. This time James gunned our old Altima and into Damron Creek we went, and the car stalled. It was about waist deep. For the first time in my life had I seen this creek this deep. Water rushed in our little car and I screamed for James to come around and get me out. We were staying for 11 days down in Russell Springs, KY and staying in a hotel in Columbia for 11 days, and this was the 6th day of our trip back down home to Russell County. James came around the car and helped me out into waist deep water. My purse was soaked and my cell phone. Several children came to try and help push our car out of the water, even a precious little dog swam through the water to try and help us, to no avail. Finally a man in a 4 wheel drive truck came by. He asked who I was and I explained my parents Oris and Gladys Rexroat are buried up at Mt Calvary Church and I am their daughter. The man said "I know Oris, I knew him." He said "Let me pull you all out of this water." He hooked his truck up and pulled us out. Our old car barely started and barely made it back to the hotel in Columbia. It took 4 days for it to dry out to get back home to Indiana. But since then we have went down to Patty Ridge and drove the same car. And we went to Old Friendship Cemetary on Patty Ridge. My great great grandpa paternal maternal side Thomas Jackson Cooper Sr. is buried there, and my great great great grandparents Cooper are buried there. And the car made it. We recently got rid of our precious blue old Altima and traded it for a new car. We have not repeated going back over the creek. We plan to buy a pick up truck one of these days, and then we will consider driving over Damron Creek again. --Melissa Melissa, thank you so much for writing of Damron Creek Road, your experiences and descriptions make me want to head there soon - I look forward to seeing pictures from there in the future! - Linda Waggener This story was posted on 2019-03-17 07:12:58
