LWC Baseball wins first game of season, splits doubleheader

By Clayton Barefield

The Lindsey Wilson baseball team split their doubleheader series against Cleary (Mich.) at Egnew Park on Saturday.

The Blue Raiders (1-11) were able to pick up their first win of the season and Cody Andreychuk's first win as the head coach of Lindsey Wilson College. LWC snagged game one 8-7 in ten innings before dropping the second game 1-0 in seven.

The Blue Raiders outhit the Cougars 15-14 on the day. Dalton Wells led the Blue Raiders with three RBI's. Derek Marrufo tacked on two RBI's as well as led the team with a total of four hits.

Game One

Lindsey Wilson opened the game with a 1-0 lead in the first before taking a 2-1 lead in the second. After a scoreless third inning, the Blue Raiders tacked on two more runs to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the fourth.

Two scoreless innings would pass before Cleary responded with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie things up at four apiece.

Cleary added one run in the eighth as well as two in during the top of the ninth to take a 7-4 lead. The Blue Raiders fought back scoring three runs in the ninth to even things out at seven runs each.

Extra innings came into play as the Blue Raiders and Cougars took the game to the tenth inning. Cleary could not connect on much in the tenth but the Blue Raiders began to surge.

Lindsey Wilson finished the game with a victory after Steven Calderon was sliding into home plate with the winning score. Cleary's catcher failed to tag Calderon out after losing the ball in a play that was originally called out.

Game Two

The Blue Raiders struggled offensively in the second game, recording only five hits. Cleary opened the game with one run in the first inning after a Blue Raider error.

Kelvin Guzman was the only pitcher for Lindsey Wilson, striking out eight batters and giving up just one walk as well.

Lindsey Wilson returns to the diamond as they are set to face Indiana University Southeast on Wednesday at Egnew Park.
