The diet of our American Robin debated in February 2019

By Linda Waggener

The Robin's winter feeding has come under the microscope this month after one writer referred to seeing them dining on berries, and another commented they don't eat produce.

We looked back in the archives and found that writer/photographer Billy Joe Fudge had documented a feeding frenzy on Lowe's Lane in Columbia in the year 2010.

He wrote, "Most of us only identify the American Robin as singular birds pulling earthworms from our lawns and paired up to raise their families in the trees and shrubbery in our landscapes, but Robins flock up during the winter to eat seeds while eating earthworms is not practical."

His feature is among 47 photos of the American Robin that pop up in a search on Columbia Magazine.com over the past decade or so. If you'd like to revisit some or all 47 photos, just click this link and select your favorites.

You'll find Robins have been photographed and shared on ColumbiaMagazine.com by all these photographers over the years: Billy Joe Fudge, George Rice, Peggy Spoon, Shamarie Harper, James E. Moss, Debbie Selby, Barbara Armitage, Tiffany Willis, Tommy Bailey, "Vicky" Wei Ye, Kayla Marie Garrison, Pen Waggener, Ed Waggener (who found and included links so the Robin's song could be listened to) and Linda Waggener.
