Wolf Creek Dam rock slide, rising lake levels causing worry

By Linda Waggener

Discussion at the Adair County Tourism meeting Tuesday evening, February 19, 2019, included concerns over the constant rain, the near record water level in both Green River Lake and Lake Cumberland and Monday's Wolf Creek Dam rockslide.

Tourism Treasurer Pam Hancock shared a message she received during the meeting, "Jamestown Marina has made the announcement that at lake elevation 745', they will be turning off all power to the lodge and the marina slips. At 743' water will be over the causeway and the only access to boats will be by water taxi."

David Lewis Butler of Holmes Bend Marina said 750' is the highest water level recorded so far and with all the rains happening and the forecast calling for more rain, this is getting very close.

A Facebook post just after 5pmCT Monday, February 18, 2019 by Linda G Shepherd of Russell Springs, KY is going viral as of this writing where she describes how she and her husband were within eight feet of being victims of a rock slide at Wolf Creek Dam. She was taking pictures when it began and wrote that her husband heard popping right before the slide began and warned her so they could get away. Her post included the thankful note that the Lord was watching over them in those moments.

The Army Corps of Engineers/Nashville manages the public land around Lake Cumberland area where land and water come together and and up the bank for about two hundred feet.
