LWC men fall after early 2nd-half struggles against Cumberlands

The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team fell to Cumberlands (Ky.) 77-66 at home on Thursday evening in Mid-South Conference action.

The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Saturday in Marietta, Georgia when they take on Life (GA) at 3pmCT.


Lindsey Wilson (11-10, 2-4 MSC) struggled against the Patriots (16-5, 3-3 MSC) shooting 39 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. Payton Cundiff led the Blue Raiders with 15 points as Kel Stotts added 13 of his own. JR Adams contributed on both ends of the court notching 13 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Three minutes into the game the Patriots controlled the action with a 7-2 run to start. The Blue Raiders struggled to find their rhythm in beginning shooting 1-of-5 from the field till a three-pointer by Eldridge at 15:54 cut the Patriots lead to two.

Cumberlands would begin to pull away from Lindsey Wilson over the next four minutes, pushing their lead to 12-5. At 11:43 remaining in the first half, Cundiff hit a three-pointer helping the Blue Raiders chip the CU lead down to four.

The Patriots offense would again begin to pull away from the Blue Raiders. Cumberlands went on a 5-0 run with 8 minutes left to play to push the Patriot lead 17-8. The Blue Raiders would again battle back over the next three minutes, going on an 8-3 run to cut the Patriots lead to 20-16.

Cundiff proved himself the difference maker, hitting another three-pointer with 2:39 left in the first half to cut the Patriot lead to 24-22. The Patriots outscored LWC 9-6, to control a five-point lead heading into the second half.

Cundiff ended the half leading the Blue Raiders with 13 points--shooting 5-of-7 from the field. Lindsey Wilson finished shooting 33.3 percent from the floor as Cumberlands managed a 38.5 shooting percentage. LWC held a slight 20-18 rebounding advantage after 20 minutes of action.

The Blue Raiders struggled early in the second half, allowing the Patriots to go on a 9-3 run to push Cumberlands lead to 42-31 over Lindsey Wilson. The Patriots would continue to build their lead with a 10-5 run on the Blue Raiders to push their lead to 16 halfway through the second half. Cumberlands would extend their lead to as many as 21 in the half.

The Blue Raiders early second-half struggles hindered any chance of a comeback, despite Lindsey Wilson eventually cutting Cumberlands lead to four with 3:05 remaining in regulation. The Patriots would push their lead back to ten points before the final buzzer rang.

Jahi Hinson led the Patriots with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Malik Colvin-Seldon chipped in with a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
