Adair School Board January 2019 Meeting - Report

By Linda Waggener

The Adair County School Board met in regular monthly session January 17, 2019. The house was packed with family and friends there to see students showing and talking about a very special program - Storymaker - they've been able to participate in. It has allowed students to win a national award and is creating movie making career options that have not been available to students in the past.

Superintendent Pamela Stephens acknowledged Academic Dean, Phyllis Curry, "for reaching out and applying for this program for Adair County Schools. It is proving students don't have to go to hollywood, they can learn to make a movie right here at home."

Adair County High School student Emma Wall opened the video presentation along with fellow students Jace Coffey and Jenna Grant and Teacher Katie Curry. They explained they can use the program and work on their skills development in arts class, power hour, and student news, Tribe TV. Ms. Curry said some of the important skills learned, in addition, include script writing, marketing and selecting the target audience.

The Adair County Middle School video presentation was introduced by teacher Rebekah Sode. Students sharing their experience included Conner Lynn, Aaron Smith, Luke Rich, Jazzy Kemp and Millie Brown. Jazzy said, "we used teamwork, assigned roles, collaborated using google docs." Milly said, "we edit and put sound on, export audios, have voice actors..." Conner Lynn demonstrated how difficult that job can be.

In other matters:

Board Member Lisa Burton was chosen to remain the Chairperson for the 2019-2020 school year. Terry Harvey was elected to continue as Board Vice-Chair for 2019-2020.

Dr. Stephens was elected to continue as secretary to the board.

The date and time for regular school board meetings for 2019-2020 school year will remain the same - third Thursday of each month at 6pmCT.

Superintendent Stephens announced that January is School Board Appreciation Month. Each Board Member was surprised with a cake to take home. She said, "I have been impressed how child-focused these board members are, and that's how they make decisions, bringing our community together. It's an honor and pleasure for me to work with you all. We want to welcome our new member, Mr. Troy Grider. You will find this a rewarding, hard job."
