The first snow of the New Year - a collection of photos

By Linda Waggener

Our first snow of the New Year was anxiously anticipated because a huge southward heading storm from the north was in the news all last week - rightly advising we be prepared. Mid-week forecasters were talking about the possibility of up to four inches of snow, even here in south central Kentucky.

By Friday, predictions were lowered to an inch or two, or a dusting of snow, depending on which county you were in, more to the north or more to the south.

What we got in Adair County was maybe an inch. It was beautiful to wake to early this morning, and by mid-afternoon today, Sunday, January 20, 2019, it's melting in the full sunshine.

It's also very dangerous because there are places that don't melt as fast as most, leaving ice in surprising spots that can throw people moving on sidewalks and roads.

Black ice is a factor until the temperatures rise to a healthy above-the-freezing-mark status and black ice can kill. Watch where you walk and drive, and if it looks wet, assume it's frozen and go ever so carefully.

The snow of January 20, 2019, the first of the New Year, put a pretty coat of about an inch of snow over everything. Temperatures in the twenties will keep part of it around. This photo was made closer to 2pmCT, not 5:30 as the old clock indicates.

First snow of 2019 - farm report, cows seem not to mind the cold

2019-01-20 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Tiffany Kessler, columbiamagazine.com.
We rode down to Eddie's family farm just to get out of the house since we've all been stuck inside with sickness. It was a frigid 23 degrees - the kind that makes your finger tips and ears hurt from cold if they're not covered. Ran across some of the Jersey babies which didn't seem to mind the weather at all. It was a good reminder that besides road crews and emergency personnel, farmers must also endure whatever mother nature decides to bestow on our Commonwealth. - Tiffany
