By George Kolbenschlag

Homeplace on Green River's annual winter board meeting is set for Saturday, January 19, 2019, at 6pmCT/7pmET, at the Adair County Extension office, 409 Fairgrounds St., (Highway 206) Columbia, KY. The theme is "Sustainability and Restoration."

The meeting is open to the public and offers an opportunity to learn more about Homeplace, including the very successful past year and the exciting plans for 2019. The meeting will include a chili dinner.

Jessica Clark, a Green County High School senior, and her vocational agriculture teacher, Samantha Gaddie, will give a 15-minute presentation about Homeplace's soil health cover crop research project and Jessica's award-winning FFA presentation based on her involvement in the project.

Rex Mann from Winchester, who is a member on the national board of the American Chestnut Foundation, will announce the establishment of an American Chestnut seed orchard at Homeplace. Included in his announcement will be an informative 15-minute presentation about the American Chestnut and efforts to restore it to its former glory as the dominant species in the eastern hardwood forest.

A brief business meeting will follow the program. It is also open to all. There will be a break following the dinner before the business meeting begins. All are also welcome to stay for the business meeting.

We would like to know if you plan to attend the program. We may need to adjust our numbers for the caterer. If you are interested, and we hope you are, you can respond to this email to let us know how many will be in your party.

We do need your support. Homeplace has great potential! We need your presence at this meeting and we need your help with volunteer service and/or monetary gifts to reach that potential. For those of you who have already helped, we greatly appreciate your support. You have helped us provide southcentral Kentucky with both a significant location for sustainable agriculture research and as a place where of all ages can share our trails, fields, cultural shows and exhibits, and witness the arts, culture and agricultural tools of our past in a wholesome, family-oriented environment. Please join us on January 19 at the Adair County Extension Office, 6pmCT/7pmET!

Homeplace is dedicated to the protection and promotion of rural American culture through the sustainability of agriculture and natural resources, utilizing education, conservation and the economic opportunities of agritourism. Homeplace showcases the local history of Adair, Green and Taylor counties.
