Free smoke alarm/installation - really? Yes, really. Start 2019 with a call - you may save your family. No matter if you live in our region or beyond, you are within the territory for the Red Cross offer - free smoke alarms, installed, with a safety analysis and tips on how to get out alive. By Linda Waggener Whenever something is offered free I wonder about it. And I always want to help the Red Cross so I called the number on ColumbiaMagazine.com December 11, 2018 and the process worked exactly as Home Fire Campaign Volunteer Dan Thies had written. One phone call to 859-951-7814, left my name and number with referrence to free smoke alarms and home fire safety check and within two weeks I received the promised call to set an appointment. He and his wife Gracie came at the appointed time and within half an hour I was the happy new owner of installed smoke alarms with 10-year barreries - and I know how and when to test them. Beyond that, the conversation centered around what to do if/when a smoke alarm goes off - what's the plan in the home? Gracie stressed, "No matter where you are in the home, you have two minutes to get out - two minutes - search for nothing, take nothing with you, nothing is worth your life." Tips: Plan your two minute route to safety and have drills. Get out first, then call 911 - that's two minutes for each person within the house to get out and arrive at a pre-arranged meeting spot. No one is allowed time to run back in - people who go back to get something are most frequently found dead by the exit. Teach school children: stop, drop and roll. Every day, Anything can be unplugged, do so. Sign up with the American Red Cross for free alarms and installation at no cost by calling (859) 951-7814. You will be contacted to set up an appointment for installation by a local Red Cross volunteer. Is it for real? Yes. This story was posted on 2018-12-29 12:45:23
