Kentucky was target of $5 million fraud attempt

Kentucky Press News Service

There was a sophisticated attempt just days ago to steal more than $5 million of taxpayer money from the state. That's what Kentucky State Treasurer Allison Ball told WKYT's Bill Bryant during the taping of the station's Newsmakers program this week.

Ball said the first attempt was to illegally take about $5.3 million. When that effort was stopped, others worth several thousand dollars each were attempted. None succeeded, Ball said, thanks to training her staff received on how to spot and stop such efforts.

The incidents took place just before Christmas, she said. An investigation on the incidents is ongoing.
