Students create Thankfulness Wall at ACHS By Morgan Harvey ACHS SOS Peer Leader Sources of Strength is a new program at Adair County High School. The mission of SOS is prevention of suicide, violence, bullying and substance abuse by training, supporting, and empowering both peer leaders and caring adults to impact their world through the power of connections. SOS focuses on spreading hope, help and strength messages and intentionally avoids focusing on sad, shock, and trauma stories normally associated with this type of work. A large group of student and adults at ACHS and ACMS received training last spring though a grant the school system received through the Kentucky Department of Behavioral Health. Since that time, peer leaders and adult mentors had organized several campaigns promoting happiness, positivity, caring and kindness throughout the schools. Today at ACHS, peer leaders incorporated Thanksgiving into their latest campaign through the creation of a "Thankfulness Wall." Students were given the opportunity to write down three things that they are thankful for on a daily basis. ACHS students quickly filled the wall with reminders that no matter how bad things may seem in the moment, if we take the time to reflect on our blessings there is always a lot to be thankful for. This is just one of many projects that students have organized for the year, and we hope to continue to grow this program.
