LWC Wrestling competed at the Lindenwood Open on Saturday

St. Charles, MO - The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team competed at the Lindenwood Open on Saturday where 17 Lindsey Wilson student-athletes compete on the day. Three wrestlers placed while Colton Gonzalez, Brandon Reed and Lucas Miozza all picked up wins over NAIA ranked wrestlers.


Trent Johnson took second place after winning four straight matches to advance all the way to the 141-pound first place match. In his first match of the day Johnson pulled out a tight 3-2 decision over Blaine Martinez of Lindenwood (Mo.) and then went on to defeat Raul Marrero from Lincoln (Ill.) with a pin in 4:43. He then added a commanding 17-3 major decision over Joey Perez of Baker (Kan.) before taking down Corbin Nirschl of Northeast Oklahoma on a 6-3 decision in the semifinals. Johnson would be forced to resign from wrestling in the championship match against Zack Donathan after an injury.

Derrick Smallwood picked up a fourth place finish at 157-pounds after picking up four wins on the day. Smallwood managed a 15-4 major decision victory over Dallas Miles of Cumberland (Tenn.), before adding another victory via pin fall against Jon McGowan of Oklahoma City in 6:59. He then added a 10-4 decision over Michael Lucas of Benedictine (Kan.) but would fall to the consolation bracket when he lost in the semifinals against Nate Trepanier of Lindenwood on a 7-4 decision. Smallwood added his second pin of the day, this time in 3:20, against Peter Enos of McKendree (Ill.) during his next match. His day came to a close in the third place bout when he lost a 9-7 decision to Issac Judge of Iowa State.

Cole Overman took sixth place at 174-pounds after winning three matches. Overman started his day off strong when he was able to record two pins. The first came over Dejan Jimenez of Labette in 1:48 and the second came over Matthew Young of Ellsworth CC in 4:26. He would then drop to the consolation bracket when he lost a 14-6 major decision to Logan Schumacher of Iowa State in the quarterfinals. Overman then defeated Kalin Winkler of Northeast Oklahoma via a 9-5 decision but would then drop back-to-back matches to finish in sixth place.

Gonzalez (No. 4 at 184) started his day with a first round bye. He then picked up a 4-3 decision over No. 7-ranked John Olivieri of Cumberland (Tenn.) but would fall in his quarterfinal matchup against Emory Parker of Illinois on a 12-4 major decision. His day would end on a 9-4 decision against Iowa States Samuel Colbray.

Miozza (No. 11 at 184) also wrestled at 184 pounds and opened his day with a 9-3 decision over Tyler Crow of Missouri Valley. He would drop his next match, falling to the consolation bracket and then receive a bye but bounced back with a big 5-2 decision victory over No. 15-ranked Tanner Borror of Oklahoma City. A 2-1 decision loss to Sergio Villalobos of Southern Illinois would end his day.

Reed (No. 1 at Heavyweight) opened his day with a 4-0 decision over the No. 5-ranked Bryson McGowan of Oklahoma City before falling to Colton McKiernan of Southern Illinois. Due to injury Reed used turned in a medical forfeit before his next match ending his day.

Austin Ramsey wrestled at 149-pounds for the Blue Raiders and started his day off with an 11-4 decision over Cordell Hunt of Labette CC (Kan.). Ramsey then fell into the consolation bracket after he dropped a match in a 3-1 decision against Nathan Swartz of Northern Illinois. He then picked up an 18-1 technical fall win over Houston Hemingsen of Davenport (Miss.) and a 10-9 decision over Connor Holman of Oklahoma City before his tournament ended when he lost to Yarhoski Aldiva from Iowa Central CC on a 3-1 decision.

Johnny Lee won his first match at 165-pounds over Malik Nottage of Ellsworth CC on a 12-5 decision but fell to the consolation bracket when he was pinned by Jacob Schrader. Lee added another win on the day when he defeated Christian Brinkley of Labette CC on a 7-5 decision and then moved further in the bracket when his next opponent had to medically forfeit. His day ended when he was pinned by Austin Purtie of Missouri Valley.

Avery Buckman wrestled at 197-pounds and opened his day with a pin against Cannon Kelly of Iowa Central CC before falling to the consolation bracket with a 10-5 decision loss to Benjamin Turnbough of Williams Baptist (Ark.) He then was able to advance all the way to the consolation finals after he picked up back-to-back pins against Nawin Hyers of Cumberland and Ryan Bracken of Oklahoma City and a medical forfeit win before falling to Zeke Silva of Northeast Oklahoma on a 19-8 decision.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on December 1 when they compete at the Indiana Little States Invitational in Indianapolis, Indiana.
