Adair County Board of Education meeting report

By Linda Waggener

Adair County School board, in executive session with all members present except for Michael Payne, voted unanimously to expel the two students who received disciplinary action for their Halloween social media postings. The students will, however, have services provided to them from the school system so that they are able to have seamless educations.

In the regular school board meeting, the pledge of allegiance was led by Adair County Elementary School fifth grade students Natalie Bardin and Gabby Kemp. They were present to show their accomplishments in the field of animation.

They worked together after regular classes and whenever possible, according to their art teacher and Natalie’s Mom, Rachel Bardin, who introduced them at the meeting.

The students created their animation program to honor veterans and it will be shown at the special event held to honor veterans the day before the Thanksgiving break, Tuesday, November 20, 2018.

Gabby spoke to board members first to describe their process. They first wrote a script for their program, then she said they edited and read and edited and read and edited some more, using the software program called Audacity.

Natalie added information about their process and said, “we now believe we could use film and/or animation in career choices after this experience. We've gained skills in working together, writing, editing, and completing a major project.

Dr Stephens pointed out that their project was made possible with funds the school system received from a grant obtained by Academic Dean Phyllis Curry.

In other matters at the School Board meeting:

- The ACHS Marching Band will be in concert Monday, November 19, 2018 at the Lindsey Wilson Stadium at —-pmCT to demonstrate their winning program, Shadowlands. They were given compliments by Dr. Stephens for having been in state competitions for 33 years in a row, and for 23 years in a row they have a statewide record of being number one in the state.

- Hunter Safety Program is being reinstated and will begin at Principal Steve Burton's school.

- The Auditor's report for the 2017-2018 school year was presented - no deficiencies were found.

- Reports of regular business were accepted as presented.
