LWC Men's Soccer claims MSC Championship, beat Cumberland 2-1 By Christopher Coombs Bowling Green, KY - The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team captured the Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship when they defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) 2-1 on Friday night at The Pit in Bowling Green, Kentucky. With the win, Lindsey Wilson (15-2-1) clinches the conference's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament which begins next weekend at host sites around the NAIA. The tournament field is scheduled to be announced on Monday. The Blue Raiders came away the best scoring chance in the game's first 25 minutes when Renan Ramos played a cross from the end line that found Rainer De Jesus just outside the top of the 18-yard box. De Jesus blasted a shot that made its way through traffic but the attempt was grabbed by a diving Cumberland goalkeeper near the right post. Lindsey Wilson was finally able to break through during the 31st minute when Anouar Adam played a long ball 35-yard to Andrew Revanales who headed the ball up and over Cumberland's goalkeeper for the score from the top of the penalty box. The Phoenix held a slight advantage in the half as they managed seven shots to the Blue Raiders six as LWC placed three of their attempts on goal while Cumberland only managed one of their attempts on target. Both teams continued to battle in the second half as both sides continued to create quality chances, but it was the Blue Raiders who would produce the best chance early. During the 58th minute Jan Engels received a cross and drove to just inside the 18-yard box. Breaking free from Phoenix defenders Engels fired a shot but the attempt was smothered by Cumberland goalkeeper Bennett Strutz, denying the attempt. Cumberland would scare the Blue Raiders during the 64th minute of action when they managed to fire off three shots in a matter of 15 seconds. The first attempt by the Phoenix's Daniel Williams ricocheted off the right post into the center of the 18-yard box and was gathered Tyler Watson. Watson's blasted another shot that was blocked away by Stephane Dass but again the ball was controlled by the Phoenix. Martin Walsh then fired a shot that rang off the right post, but this time it was cleared to safety by the LWC defense. Andrew Revanales would score an insurance goal during the 82nd minute to give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead. Neville Morgan played a ball on past Phoenix defenders as Revanales was able to win the foot race and then get around a charging Cumberland goalkeeper to score into a wide-open goal. The Phoenix would cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to just one during the 83rd minute when Julian Lucumi scored on a free kick from 25-yards out. Cumberland would almost tie the game during the 85th minute but Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper William Diaz was able to make a diving save on a header that was directed straight for the upper left corner of the goal. The Blue Raiders would hold off the Cumberland attack over the final five minutes of action to secure the victory. The Phoenix outshot Lindsey Wilson 19-8 including 7-5 in shots on goal for the match. The MSC Tournament title is the 13th for the Blue Raiders and their first since the 2012 season. Lindsey Wilson learns its opening-round opponent on Monday, Nov. 12, as the NAIA releases the tournament field during its selection show at Noon CT on the NAIA website.
