Columbia traffic stop leads to drug arrest

NOTE: An arrest is not a finding of guilt. An individual placed under arrest is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceeding.

By Tpr. Nick Hale

On November 3, 2018, at approximately 11:05pmCT, Trooper Billy Begley was on routine patrol in the limits of Columbia, when he observed a 2006 Equinox traveling on the Columbia Bypass with a rear license plate not illuminated.

Trooper Begley initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, 48 year old Jo Ann Torres, and a passenger, 29 year old Samantha Grider, both of Russell Springs, KY.

Trooper Begley had information that Torres had been selling methamphetamine. Columbia Police Officer Johnny Dial and K9 Gunner assisted, resulting in the canine making an alert on the vehicle.

Upon searching the vehicle units located a small glass pipe with suspected methamphetamine residue and a couple of small bags of suspected crystal meth.

Trooper Begley arrested Torres charging her with rear license plate not illuminated, failure to produce insurance, trafficking in a controlled substance 1st degree 1st offense (> or = 2 grams methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Grider was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, trafficking in a controlled substance 1st degree 1st offense (> or = 2 grams methamphetamine), promoting contraband- 1st degree and possession of a controlled substance 2nd degree - drug unspecified.

Both subjects were lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail. Trooper Begley was assisted by Columbia Police Department and the Adair County Sheriff's Office.
