2nd half surge gives men's soccer a 4-2 win over Shawnee State

By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team picked up a 4-2 win over Shawnee State (Ohio) in Mid-South Conference action on the Blue Raiders senior night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Sunday, October 28, 2018, when they play host to Life University (GA) at 4pmCT at Walter S. Reuling Stadium, 151 Holloway Drive, Columbia, KY.

The Blue Raiders (11-2-1, 5-1-0 MSC) managed 34 shots, with 14 of them being on goal as Shawnee State (7-11-0, 0-7-0 MSC) produced just six shots in the match as three of their attempts were on target. LWC received 19 corner kicks in the match as the Bears managed just two.

Lindsey Wilson would take 18 shots in the first half as seven found their way on goal but the Bears would manage to put both of their two shots on goal, as the half closed with the teams knotted at one.

The Blue Raiders created plenty of scoring opportunities across the first 15 minutes of action, recorded nine shots with four of them on goal. However, the Bears goalkeeper Kade Tomlinson stood tall in goal denying all of the Blue Raider's early opportunities.

Lindsey Wilson would finally breakthrough in the 20th minute when Jan Engels played a beautiful cross -- from outside the 18-yard box -- that found an open Andrew Revanales who used a back heel touch to score the game first goal.

LWC would continue its offensive pressure in the half recording five more shots, two on goal but it would be the Bears who would capitalize during the 38th minute on what was just Bears second shot of the game. Jonah Hensley played a through ball to Kevin deLange who was able to beat LWC goalkeeper William Diaz to the right post with his shot, leveling the score at 1-1.

The Blue Raiders would keep up their offensive attack at the start of the second half as they were able to record four corner kicks across the first five minutes of action but were unable to convert on the opportunities.

Lindsey Wilson finally managed to convert on their scoring chances as they scored two goals - just one minute apart -- during the 52rd and 53rd minute.

Engels scored LWC's second goal of the match when he received a through ball from Stephane Dasse. Engels held off a Bear defender from 14-yards out and was able to finish into the top-right corner of the goal.

Just moments later, Revanales increased the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-1 when he one touched a Rainer De Jesus cross past the Bears goalkeeper.

The Bears clawed their way back, scoring during the 56th minute on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box on a ball that crashed into the bottom left corner of the goal. The score cut the LWC lead in half to just one at 3-2.

Lindsey Wilson was able to add an insurance goal with just over 12 minutes left in the match when De Jesus created space from 12-yard out on after a few good touches before finishing into the goal, just under the crossbar. Neville Morgan picked up the assist on the play.

Lindsey Wilson would limit the Bears to just three shots over the final 28 minutes of the match as all of the attempts failed to make their way on goal, giving LWC the 4-2 victory.
