Preparing to register your Street Legal SPV

According to the Kentucky Association of Counties, Senate Bill 63, which passed during the 2025 Regular Session, gives counties and cities the authority to adopt an ordinance and allow street-legal special purpose vehicles on highways within their jurisdictional boundaries.

The new law takes effect June 27, 2025, although most local authorities are waiting for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's regulations for implementation of SB 63 before passing local ordinances.

Adair County Clerk Lisa Greer says that, "In the meantime, you can be preparing for your Sheriff Inspection by making sure your ATV meets the minimum requirements set by law for registration."

Chicken Math, or, Be responsible for your animals

By Miss Donna Rieder
Clifty Creek Farm

There's a term people use when they find their animal "collection" starting to grow, whether it's one goat having triplet kids, or going to Tractor Supply and coming home with 20 more baby chicks: Goat Math, or, Chicken Math. Or Cat Math, or Dog Math...you get the idea.

Unfortunately, Cat or Dog Math is usually multiplication. That's obviously what happened to the people who dumped a dozen or more dogs off near my farm a few weeks ago. The dogs were obviously all related, because they were all colored the same and most had bobbed tails. It seems like a case of one dog not being spayed and then having litter after litter of puppies, until the owners became so overwhelmed that they felt they had no choice but to take them all out to the country and dump them off.

But where their problems ended, mine began. While my neighbor and I were able to trap 9 of the dogs, the others became wary of the trap and refused to be caught. That Sunday I came home from church to find one of the dogs in with my chickens, with several killed, several mauled to the point where I had no choice but to kill them, and several more missing. I was heartbroken because I love my chickens and get a lot of joy from just watching them do their thing. I was also devastated because I sell eggs to supplement my income, and that loss hit me where it hurts. So, I learned a new kind of Chicken Math.

Basketball: Indians 3-1 in KABC Bluegrass Shootout

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team wrapped up their 2025 summer ball season with a 3-1 run in the KABC Bluegrass Shootout.

On Saturday, June 21, 2025 the team defeated Westfield High School out of Ohio 60-44. The team then went on to face Seneca High School later that day and fell to the Redhawks 49-34.

On Sunday, the team matched up against Paul Lawrence Dunbar, a team that had a very rough 3-27 season last year. The Indians defeated the Bulldogs of PLD 58-55. The KABC Bluegrass Shootout and the entire summer season came to a close as the Tribe defeated Whitley County 64-59. The Colonels of Whitely County come off a 19-11 season last year and did not graduate any of their top six scorers.

All in all, the summer of 2025 was a major growth opportunity for the Indians, a lot has changed since last season, but after this summer there is little doubt in my mind that the 2025-2026 season will be another exciting season for the Tribe!

Transportation Cabinet hosting virtual public forums

From Naitore Djigbenou/Allen Blair

Frankfort, KY - To ensure certified businesses can compete fairly for federally and state funded transportation projects, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is seeking public input on proposed goals for disadvantaged businesses.

To comply with a longstanding federal requirement, the Cabinet's Office for Civil Rights and Small Business Development is developing a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) participation goal for the next three federal fiscal years to be reviewed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) that historically takes effect October 1, 2025.

The virtual public forums provide a convenient opportunity to give input and learn more about how the Cabinet establishes fair goals while states await further guidance from FHWA.

Rev. Brumfield building community through partnerships

'I think 90% of ministry is just showing up, being present and then letting God do the rest.'

From Duane Bonifer

The Rev. Tyler Brumfield's first year at Lindsey Wilson College was one of lessons, observations and a few revelations.

Brumfield, who served his first year as Lindsey Wilson chaplain, helped lead a campus ministry program in 2024-25 that demonstrated that a chaplain's office is often most effective when it is not restricted to the confines of a chapel.

Brumfield said it was no accident that members of the Lindsey Wilson community saw him and the students he works with in campus ministry throughout the campus. That was the result of a decision that he and the campus ministry students made at the start of the school year when they held a retreat at The United Methodist Church's Loucon Training and Retreat Center in Leitchfield, Kentucky.

"When we gathered together there back in August, we developed a mission statement that called for us to follow Jesus, make disciples and serve others," he said. "So that's what we set out to do throughout the school year."

Thought for the day: what counts

"It is difficult to know what counts in the world. Most of us count credits, honors, dollars. But at the bulging center of mid-life, I am beginning to see that the things that really matter take place not in the boardrooms, but in the kitchens of the world." -- Allen Sledge

Many get thanks for History of Adair County Fair book

By Rodney White

Several individuals were very helpful in sharing information and memories from attending and participating in the Adair County Fair through the years.

Fay Roy Davidson answered countless questions in an interview and in numerous text messages. Every time I needed information or clarification, Fay always shared her knowledge.

Charles Grimsley shared his memories of the fair during his childhood. He began parking cars in the VFW lot at an early age, and his enthusiasm continues today working with the Adair County Fair Association in their efforts to rebuild the fair tradition.
