Why don't we live like that? By Narda Tate My husband and I had just returned home to the United States after working for 2 years in Bosnia. Part of getting settled back into being in America was buying a home. We eventually found and bought a home through a distinguished looking, kindly real estate agent. He was very nice and during our conversations he told us that his wife was a nurse at a hospital in the next town north of us. After getting settled in and ready to start working again, I found myself with a job at that same hospital and after a little time, met our agent's wife. She was a sweet and competent nurse and I thought no more about it. That is, until the day I heard that our real estate agent, her husband, had passed away. It was a shock, but I learned that he had suffered from a debilitating disease that had slowly claimed him over a few years. Several weeks later, his widow came into the Human Resources Department where I worked and we talked for a little bit about her husband and her loss. I do not know why I ever asked her the question that came to my mind - in retrospect it seems that it was perhaps a little too personal - but I am so thankful that I asked. Her response changed my life. Article continues... click here to read the whole article, or to share, print, or bookmark it. 2026-06-24 09:56:37 | Comments
Keith is proud of T.J. investment in long term health "It's about investing in long term health and vitality and quality of your life for our friends, our neighbors and our families here at home..."" By Anthony Keith, Respiratory Supervisor, TJ Health Columbia I began my journey with TJ six years ago at the height of the COVID pandemic. And those challenging times, working alongside some dedicated healthcare professionals really made a lasting impact on me. As an Adair County native, this day is deeply personal for me. I'm thrilled to help to bring this much needed cardiopulmonary rehab service to the community where I grew up. For far too long, patients have had to go elsewhere, drive long distances for the care that they needed. And being able to provide targeted, individualized rehabilitation to the people of Adair and surrounding counties is a dream come true. T.H. Health Cardiopulmonary Rehab opens Tuesday "Recovery shouldn't mean traveling away from home..."" ByJodie Holgate, EVP of Patient Care Services For so many of our neighbors here in Columbia and across Adair County, a heart attack, heart surgery, or a diagnosis like COPD doesn't just change in a single moment. It changes how someone breathes, how they move, and how they show up for the people they love. Recovery from those events shouldn't mean traveling away from home, shouldn't mean going away from family, or away from the community who knows you, but today that will change. Courtney Carter to lead LWU Sport Performance Program By Duane Bonifer Courtney Carter, one of Kentucky's leading voices in college sport and higher education, has been named to lead Lindsey Wilson University's sport performance program. Carter - who brings nearly two decades of experience in higher education, sport management instruction and college athletics research - will oversee Lindsey Wilson's sport performance major, which is the first in Kentucky and the second in the nation. The program is designed to document, assess and strengthen learning that occurs through collegiate sport participation, giving student-athletes an academic framework for understanding what they learn through practice, training, competition, rehabilitation and team membership. "It's exciting to be on the ground floor of this dynamic new academic program," said Carter. "This program gives students a way to study what they are already living every day through sport. It helps them understand how sport is science, how sport is education and how sport is art." KDFW: Sightings of young black bears increase in summer From Lisa Jackson Frankfort, KY - Sightings of black bears have recently been occurring in neighborhoods, backyards, urban areas, and even on dash cams and doorbell cameras in areas of Kentucky not accustomed to seeing many of them. Biologists and game wardens with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources want the public to know that this is normal bear behavior and encourage the public to learn more about Kentucky bears to better understand and live safely with them. In late spring and early summer, young male black bears get pushed out of areas where they were raised in eastern Kentucky by older and more dominant male bears for mating season. These juveniles may wander up to several weeks or more into unfamiliar territory in search of food, good habitat and prospective mates before instinctively returning to the mountains by the fall. Bears can travel 20 miles or more in a day if left undisturbed, and Kentucky bears have been suspected of traveling as far away as Missouri in recent years. Jane Clemens' story flows through Darlene Campbell This is the story of Columbia native Jane Lampton Clemens, mother of Mark Twain, researched and performed by Darlene Campbell at the Mark Twain Storytelling Festival on June 20, 2026. Darlene's words follow: When I was five years old with Christina, our house slave, how the knife got from the potato to my eye, I'll never know, but it happened, and I never could see well out of that eye again. However, as most people put glasses on to read, I have to take them off because my son, Samuel, whom you may or may not know, was afraid that I would forget what I was supposed to say in my old age. So he wrote me a letter reminding me, "Dear mother, you know how absent-minded you are. So I thought I should write you some reminders of the things that you need to say when you tell those people about your trip from Columbia, Kentucky to Hannibal, Missouri." And that's what I want to talk to you about today - how I came to be born in Columbia and ended up in Hannibal, Missouri. Storytellers brought history to life at first ever MTS Festival By Duane Bonifer Area residents had the rare opportunity to hear from a Revolutionary War hero, a medical pioneer and one of the greatest American authors on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the inaugural Mark Twain Storytelling Festival. Held at Lindsey Wilson University, the event featured seven speakers who celebrated the art of storytelling, local history and Mark Twain's ancestral ties to Columbia. Twain was born in 1835 in Missouri as Samuel Langhorne Clemens, but his mother, Jane Lampton Clemens, was born on June 18, 1803, in Columbia. She married John Marshall Clemens in May 1823 in Columbia. The couple moved to Tennessee before settling in Missouri in 1835. The Mark Twain Storytelling Festival was the brainchild of students in Lindsey Wilson theatre professor Robert Brock's arts administration class, who presented their idea for an annual cultural event for Columbia-Adair County to Columbia Mayor Pamela Hoots. Tips for self care may help with depression This was shared by a trusted friend on social media. An internet check has it coming in pieces from multiple sources. It's shared here as it sounds like pretty good common sense self care. -- LW Shower. Not a bath, a shower. Use water as hot or cold as you like. You don't even need to wash. Just get in under the water and let it run over you for a while. Sit on the floor if you need to. Moisturize everything. Use whatever lotion you like. Unscented? Dollar store lotion? Fancy 48 hour lotion that makes you smell like a field of wildflowers? Use whatever you want, and use it all over your entire skin. Put on clean, comfortable clothes. Put on your favorite underwear. Those ridiculous boxers you bought last christmas with candy cane hearts on the butt? Put them on. Drink cold water. Use ice. If you want, add some mint or lemon for an extra boost.
