Farm Scene in Green Co.

2026-03-15 - Green Co., KY - Photo by Robert Ellis, robertelliswoodworking.com.
Robert writes, "I turned off Ebenezar Road onto Blowing Springs Road heading to a specific barn about a mile past this farm. While I've seen this barn numerous times, I've never stopped to take a photo. Today I guess was different, because the wagon in the field in front of the barn caught my eye.

Initially I pressed onwards to the barn I orginally set out to view, but I turned around and headed back to this location. Since the tree in the photo appears to be a hard maple, I'm also going to try to remember to revisit in the fall, hopefully adding some autumn colors into the next version of the image."

Basketball: Beaten on the boards, beaten out of Nashville

By Ryan Hoots
Sports Director, UntdWeStnd.com

Nashville, TN - Kentucky's stay in the SEC Tournament didn't last past Friday afternoon. Florida saw to that.

71-63. Gators. Wildcats headed back to the Bluegrass early. Tails tucked.

Ugly game. Ugly box score. Ugly feeling walking out of Bridgestone Arena. Only thing uglier are the fans clad in orange hanging around for after the game.

Columbia Police Department Crime Tip-Line: Cally's Line

Note: For emergencies, always dial 911

From Evan Burton, Chief of Police
Columbia Police Department

The Columbia Police Department operates an anonymous Crime Tip-Line known as "Cally's Line" at 270-378-2259. This secure and confidential phone number is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and accepts phone calls, voicemails, and text messages from citizens in Adair County, Kentucky who wish to report criminal activity.

Criminal activities that can be reported include drug trafficking, wanted fugitives, burglary or theft information, and any other criminal activity you wish to report.

It was recently brought to my attention that at a local meeting an individual stated that anonymous information from the Columbia Police Department Crime Tip-Line "Cally's Line" was not being shared with other local law enforcement agencies. I want to assure the community that this statement is incorrect.

When you report an anonymous tip, the information is taken seriously and shared with the appropriate law enforcement agency within your jurisdiction to ensure the best possible response.

The Columbia Police Department officer who manages the Crime Tip-Line shares information with other agencies, including the Adair County Sheriff's Office, Kentucky State Police, Dispatch, and surrounding county law enforcement agencies.

Strengthen Kentucky Homes application portal now open

From Kristin Voskuhl

Frankfort, KY - On March 12, 2026, Gov. Beshear announced the Strengthen Kentucky Homes (SKH) Program is open and taking homeowner applications. The new program provides qualified Kentucky homeowners with grants up to $10,000 to help fortify their roofs and protect against extreme wind and hail events.

In April 2024, Gov. Andy Beshear signed House Bill 256, creating the Strengthen Kentucky Homes Program and appropriating $5 million in grant funds for Kentucky homeowners.

"In just six years, Kentucky has faced 15 federally declared weather disasters and we're working hard to build back stronger and to protect our people from future events," said Gov. Beshear. "This program will help Kentuckians strengthen their homes, providing families peace of mind when the next severe weather hits. Even better, it will also help them save money at a time folks need it most."

The SKH application portal opened on March 1, 2026, and is accepting applications from qualified homeowners. Since opening the program, the Department of Insurance has received more than 150 applications from all over the state.

Trout Lily imminent

2026-03-13 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
One of the best things about the middle of March is that every walk outside turns up something new. Crocuses, daffodils, forsythia bushes and spring beauties are already blooming, and now trout lilies are starting to put leaves through the ground in anticipation of warmer, longer days.

Letter: Beaver Residents

James Roberts writes:
Pen, these are definitely signs of beavers. You can tell by the long chisel taper cut of the trees. They only cut a tree from the height that they can reach while sitting or standing up. They have razor sharp teeth that bring down an average size tree in record time.

If you'll look around either direction on the waterway, you should be able to locate their beaver den/beaver dam. They can move an average size log fairly long distances from the use of their strong flat tail. Hope this helps, James Roberts.

Carol Perkins: Pick Me, Pick Me

Previous Column: Wednesday Afternoons

By Carol Perkins

When I am sitting in my chair, sewing eyes on teddy bears or making necklaces from beads, I often watch The Wall and Press Your Luck. If I were in California, I'd apply to be on both games since it takes no brain cells.

Some of those questions from The Wall are so off the wall that no one would know the answers, so I would pick B.

At the end of that show, the "isolated" person can take the original money or risk it for what might be left on the wall. Last week, a contestant signed for the original money and lost $800,000.

I would risk what might be rather than what is guaranteed. Easy to say when I'm not deciding.

Game shows are addictive. "The Price is Right" is another show I could be on without thinking deeply.

LWU students learn valuable conservation lessons in Belize

Among howler monkeys and scarlet macaws in a Central American rainforest, students explore conservation in a global context.

By Duane Bonifer

Five Lindsey Wilson University students spent their spring break in one of the planet's most biologically diverse ecosystems, where they studied, observed and learned about conservation and land management.

The students, who were led by two Lindsey Wilson faculty members, spent February 28-March 8, 2026, in the Central American nation of Belize, thanks in part to a special university grant.

Six of the students' days were dedicated to learning about ecology and conservation efforts on a 1,153-acre privately protected area in the foothills of the Maya Mountains in southern Belize along the crystal-clear Bladen River.

A former British colony, the nation of Belize is the equivalent of scattering the 300,000 people who live in Lincoln, Nebraska, across the U.S. state of New Hampshire. In addition to having a great deal of cultural and linguistic diversity, the tropical nation houses some of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on earth.

Reminder: Bond can only be paid in person

By Sheriff Gary Roy
Adair County Sheriff's Office

I have received a couple of complaints from people that have had family members incarcerated in the Adair County Jail and someone is pretending to be an employee of the jail and is trying to get them to pay them cash for a bond, so the family members can get out of jail.

This is not true, this is a scam. I have spoken with Jailer Buddy Powell, and he stated the only way you can pay a bond is in person at the jail or at the courthouse.

Jailer Powell stated that jail staff will not call you and ask you to send money to anywhere for any reason. I'd like to remind you to never give any personal information out to anyone on the phone.

The Adventures and Misadventures of a City Girl Gone Country

Previous Column: Introducing The Farm Chronicles by Donna Rieder

By Donna Rieder

In reference to the title of my book, it's not that I was a city girl so much as that I wanted to live on a farm of my own and have my horse there instead of at a boarding stable miles away.

I'd spent my teenage years in the woods of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, building tree forts with my older brother. By the time I was fifteen, I knew how to use a tape measure, hammer a nail and safely operate power tools. Three years of Wood Shop in High School catapulted me straight into the field of residential construction, where I spent the next 20 years of my life. As if being a female in the construction arena wasn't enough of a challenge, the cold winter weather that brought my work to a grinding halt every November convinced me to move further south.

LWU students see Stories Come to Life in Ireland

By Duane Bonifer

Alannah Bowman '27 heard lots of stories about Irish history and folklore from family members while growing up.

During Lindsey Wilson University's spring break, Bowman was among 25 Lindsey Wilson students and five employees who had immersive study-abroad experience in Ireland. While touring the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, they took in Irish theatre, visited the region's historic locations and walked in the footsteps of literary legends.

"It was like seeing those stories come to life," said Bowman, a business administration major with an emphasis in accounting and a history minor. "And they come to life with multiple sides to them. It's just beautiful."

To prepare for the March 1-9, 2026, trip, which was funded in part by a university grant and a gift from the late honorary alumnus Dr. Jerry Westerfield of Russell Springs, Kentucky, the students spent the first seven weeks of the spring semester studying Irish art, culture, film and literature in "Changed Utterly: Irish Independence from Page to Stage," a special topics class taught by English professor Karolyn Steffens.

Letter: What we spend our water on

By Joyce M. Coomer

I just finished reading an article in the February 11-17, 2026, issue of The Epoch Times, titled "What We Spend Our Water on Is What We Worship." The article was written by Mollie Engelhart, author of "Debunked by Nature."

The article tells of some problems that have arisen for farmers and landowners in other states, and these are things that the government officials and the citizens of this county need to think about. Seriously think about so that the same problems are prevented from occurring here.

I recommend everyone read this article, look around, think of their daily habits, and see what they are spending their water on.

Note: Mollie Engelhart's article is at theepochtimes.com, but an account may be required to read it online.
