Desmond Lee McGowan, 79, Russell County, KY (1941-2021)

Desmond Lee McGowan, age 79, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Tuesday, March 23 2021 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was a member and trustee of Parks Ridge Church of God, a retired maintenance employee of Ford Motor Company and a Veteran of the United States Army. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gene McGowan and a sister Jackie Bailey. Military honors performed by the Russell County Honor Guard.

Eugenia Simpson, 97, Green County, KY (1924-2021)

Eugenia Simpson was born March 5, 1924 in Green County, Kentucky to the late B.T. and Troy Davis Judd. She departed this life Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at her home in Green County, having attained the age of 97 years and 19 days.

She had made a profession in Christ and was a member of the Oak Grove Separate Baptist Church and was a member of the Fruit of the Loom Founders Club. She worked for Fruit of the Loom for 42 years.

Fatal Collision on Taylor County KY210 closes road

THURSDAY EVENING UPDATE, Campbellsville, KY (March 25,2021) - The Kentucky State Police is investigating a Fatal Collision on KY 210 near the Pittman Creek Bridge, approximately 7 miles west of Campbellsville which happened early afternoon resulting in road closure.

One person was fatally injured and three were hospitalized. A detour was established from KY210 using Moss Road to Mac Pittman Road to KY 569 back to KY 210.

All commercial trucks requested to use US 68 from Campbellsville to Greensburg to North KY61 to Hodgenville. More information to come when it becomes available.

Donnie Branham, 73, Cumberland County, KY (1947-2021)

Donnie Branham, age 73 of Burkesville, Kentucky passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at his home. Donnie was born on October 14, 1947 in Cumberland County, KY to the late Lawrence and Susan Bryant Branham. He was a former logger and dozer operator.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Sharon Dale, one brother, Rocky Branham, ne granddaughter, Courtney Branham, and one great grandson, Kason Branham.

Shelter available in Adair Annex during storms tonight

Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan said, "With the threat of severe weather this evening and tonight, the Adair County Annex Building Basement will be open for a storm shelter."

Families and workplaces need to be familiar with plans for safely shelter and be prepared in case there are disruptions to local utilities.

“Given the National Weather Service advance warnings, this will be a very dangerous system capable of no-notice sporadic tornado activity throughout the evening and early morning hours across the state,” said Michael Dossett, director of the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management. “Now is the time to ensure that your family, neighbors and work colleagues have reviewed their safety plan for shelter or evacuation to a safe place in the event of severe weather.

Storm watch in effect this afternoon, evening

Mike Keltner, Emergency Management Director, reminds us that there is a severe thunderstorm threat between 4pm and 11pmCT this afternoon and evening and to take necessary precautions to stay safe.

Damaging winds with 50 mph gusts are possible. The National Weather Service says it cannot rule out a brief upgrade to a high wind warning.

Glenna Edwards, 83, Adair County, KY native (1937-2021)

Columbia native Sue Ingram Sherman, San Antonia, TX, asked that we share the loss of her dear friend Glenna Young Edwards on Columbia Magazine. They kept in touch every day. Glenna's obituary information follows.
Glenna L. Edwards, age 83, of Somerset, KY passed from this life on Saturday, March 20, 2021 after a brief illness. She was born on December 10, 1937 in Columbia, Kentucky, daughter of the late Jack Young and Ruth Vanhoy Young.

Glenna was an avid reader and had a genuine passion for taking care of others, including her beloved dogs and cats. She would send birthday cards to many family and friends as an act of kindness. She was a loving devoted wife of 56 years to the Late H. O. Edwards. She was a caring and compassionate caregiver who spent several years as a Clerical Associate at the Lake Cumberland Medical Associates in Somerset as a dedicated employee. Glenna was a kind-hearted, friendly and generous person and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

As of 8:29amCT on March 25, 2021, the Boil Water Advisory starting at 7130-9950 Russell Springs Rd. and all side roads in between has been lifted by the Division of Water Columbia Office. This means your water is safe for human consumption. You no longer have to boil your water.

Lottie Baker, 42, Cumberland County, KY (1978-2021)

Lottie Baker, age 42, of Burkesville, Kentucky passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville as the result of an automobile accident.

Lottie was born on September 13, 1978 in Cumberland County, KY to Minnie Long Young and the late Willie Truman Young. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by one brother, Lester Young.

Letter: Directional signs are needed around town

Bobby Morrison, Chairman of Adair EDA, writes:
Like what you are doing for truck routing - It would be nice to have directional signs for Greensburg, Campbellsville, Burkesville, Albany, Russell Springs, Jamestown - especially at ends of Bypass and at intersection of with 80/61.

They should also emphasize Truck Route. However, no telling how long it would take to get them made. About a year ago someone ran over the stop sign of Connection 2 (off 80/61 to Will Walker Road). Know it has been reported by different people and someone (maybe state) removed old crashed sign but state has not replaced.

Also, signs emphasizing that non-delivery tractor trailers are not permitted in downtown area/square.

Vicky Jean Harris Higginbotham, 67, Russell County, KY

Vicky Jean Harris Higginbotham, of Russell Springs, Kentucky, passed from this life on Tuesday morning, March 23, 2021, at the Russell County Hospital. She was 67 years of age.

Born at home, on August 3, 1953, in Eli, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Othar and Mona Hart Harris. Vicky was a bus monitor for the Russell County Board of Education and a former clerk for KOA Campground. She was a loving wife, mother, and a Christian lady. She attended Pine Grove Separate Baptist Church and was the piano player for the Higginbotham Quartet for over 30 years.

Stormy weather today, high 69F, wind advisory tonight

It's currently 61F at the Adair County Mesonet station. We'll have showers and thunderstorms today. Some of the storms could be severe. Today's high will be near 69F. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph.

Tonight will bring continued showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Expect an overnight low around 49F. It will be breezy, with a south wind 16 to 23 mph becoming southwest after midnight.

The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued a Wind Advisory, for an area including Adair and all surrounding counties, which is in effect from 7pmCT this evening until 7amCT on Friday. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph.

Friday will start mostly cloudy, then gradually become sunny, with a high near 65F. West wind 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.

Friday Night should be mostly clear, with an overnight low around 44F. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.
