Letter: Green color substance leak into the creek Bryan New writes: That looks like one heck of a leak! Whats the follow up?Comments re: Green Color in waterway behind Columbia carwash on N 55 Bryan, thank you for writing. Several folks have been concerned and asking questions since this happened. We're gathering details that will be published in the morning - basically saying our water is safe to use and that the creek water cannot get into the CAUD water supply which is pulled directly from Green River Reservoir. - LW 2026-01-02 22:36:28 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Basketball: Rivalry Day for the Indians The 2024-2025 Adair County Indians will be recognized and given their 5th Region Champions rings between the girls' and boys' games. By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Friday, January 2, 2026, is Rivalry Day for the Adair County Indians, as they face off against the team up north, Taylor County (9-4). The boys' game follows the battle between the Lady Cardinals and Lady Indians which will get underway at 5:30pmCT. It has been some 35 months since the Cardinals last beat the Indians in Columbia, back in January of 2023. In addition to a three-game winning streak at home, the Tribe rides a three game winning streak in general against the Cardinals, and a four game regular season winning streak against Taylor County. Despite the recent success, matchups against Taylor County are generally tight, with the last two matchups being decided by three and four points. In a game that tight, almost anything can make a win or lose difference, including a loud crowd. Adair County has been killing Taylor County on this front with a pro-Adair County crowd being present for the matchups lately, whether the game is held in Columbia or Campbellsville. Tonight, with the game in Columbia, the Indians will be looking for a large pro-Tribe crowd to make a difference. So, please come out and cheer on your Indians as they look to extend their winning ways against the Team up North! Tip-off for the boys game is scheduled for 7pmCT on January 2, 2026, in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. Tickets are available at hometownticketing.com. 2026-01-02 14:44:20 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Sports

Letter: Quilt designs were promoted by Highway Department Doug McCammish writes: You or your mom may remember that there was a KY highway deparment (?) program 15-20 years ago that promoted the quilt design on barns along the highway. I suspect Sue Stivers told me about it, and we began noticing the number of barns in Adair and surrounding counties with quilt designs. Thanks for writing! The highway department definitely played an important part, but some barn owners may have been answering a higher cultural calling. As the late Ed Waggener commented back in 2008, "Mrs. Browning's daughter, Vicki Browning Pike, cannot abide uncouth cows. The artwork is to enrich their lives. After all, cows are people, too. If motorists along the parkway enjoy the art, that's a bonus. The quilt also has distlefinkian functions and brings good fortune, I'm sure." After checking out Robert's photo, linked below, we also recommend searching the CM archives for more great photos of barn quilts. Basketball: Come out tonight to support Indians Note from editor: The 2024-2025 Adair County Indians will be recognized and given their 5th Region Champions rings immediately following the girls games and prior to the boys games. By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Today is a day that comes only once a year: Adair County gets to host their rivals in a boys/girls double header at home. The Lady Indians will face a hot Lady Cardinals team that has won four straight, and 10 of their last 11 to open the season. Taylor County is led in scoring by freshman Kennedy Deener, who is averaging almost 26 points a game, followed by sophomore Greta Bradstreet, who averages 14 points per game. However, the Lady Indians are coming to the game from an impressive third place performance in the Kelly Holiday Classic, and winners of four of their last six games. No matter how hot the Lady Indians have been this season, it has been a struggle to defeat the Team up North. In fact, it has been since 2018 that Adair County has defeated the Lady Cardinals. Since that time, there have been some 17 matchups, four of which have come in the post-season. Despite what has been a dominant streak for the Cardinals, Adair county has notably given Taylor County several close scares, a nine point victory for the Lady Cardinals last year in Columbia saw them shoot just 31.5% from the floor, the worst they shot in a a win all season, and saw them held to 49 points, the second fewest in a win all season. Then, the next time Taylor County went on the road to face the Lady Indians they gave up 60 point of offense, the most they gave up the whole post season until they fell to Fredrick Douglass in the second round of the state tournament. Point being, that the running trend as off late, is that Taylor County seems to not be at their best when facing the Lady Indians, especially when doing so in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium. So tonight, we have a unique opportunity to continue this trend, and perhaps even amplify it, and that can be accomplished by making the environment as loud and electric as possible. Please, come out tonight and support your Lady Indians as they go to battle against the Lady Cardinals. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pmCT on January 2, 2026, in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY.
