Happiness is - an empty bladder

By Linda Waggener

Let your exploration begin - what is happiness to you? I always enjoy Carol Perkins' columns and this week's article, a deep study in finding what makes her happy, is especially fun.

I'm starting my list now and finding that simply contemplating what makes me happy actually makes me happy - even before I start to write!

Those who knew Dr. Steve Aaron may remember that he not only wrote about the subject when he was a young medical student, he artfully created little framed signs to share with friends, signs like this one - "happiness is an empty bladder."

From Anita Hatchett

Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that Kentucky Main Street (KYMS) program communities finished 2022 strong with a reported $47.9 million cumulative investment in downtown commercial districts such as Campbellsville's.

This total represents $16.3 million in private investments matched by $31.7 million in public improvements encompassing building rehabilitation, new construction, infrastructure and special projects offset by rehabilitation tax credits, grant funds and local city and county budgets. Additionally, these communities finished the year with a net gain of 587 new jobs, 130 new businesses and 201 rehabilitation projects completed in Main Street districts.

"One of Kentucky's great assets is the many downtown communities that are still vibrant throughout the commonwealth," Gov. Andy Beshear said. Tommy Druen: Take the Picture

Previous Column: Finding Common Ground

By Tommy Druen

In the summer of 1995, I embarked on my first trip to Washington, D.C. It was the summer before my final year of high school, and I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Kentucky Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour. As a seventeen-year-old with a deep fascination for history and government, the experience proved to be truly inspiring. We met with Kentucky's congressional delegation, toured our nation's most iconic buildings and monuments, and even caught sight of a 6'8" figure sporting a full beard and a mini-skirt. Some aspects were more memorable than others.

Before setting out for that first day in the capital, I vividly recall the wise words of Dennis Cannon, one of our chaperones and then the Director of Public Relations for Kentucky Electric Cooperatives. Recognizing it was the first time in Washington for many of us, he anticipated we would be taking pictures of the customary tourist attractions. His suggestion was that we take the bulk of our pictures with each other. "You'll never get a better picture of the Washington Monument than one on a postcard," he said. "But you will never find a postcard featuring your friends."

Letter: Congratulations Suzanne

Mikki Flowers writes:
I just want to say congratulations to Suzanne Rogers on her retirement. I've worked with her since she started while I had different jobs. I was also lucky enough to work with her in the sheriff's office for about 18 months. Her knowledge of the job is/was a blessing to new sheriffs. It was a pleasure to work with (for) her and I feel like I made a great friend. Congratulations Suzanne.
