By Tiffany Collins, City of Columbia

Sources of Strength, a group from the Adair County High School, presented the new mental health flag to City Hall in recognition of Mental Health Month.

The Mental Health Flag was created as a collaboration with over 100 Louisville area mental health organizations, care providers, artists, designers, advocates, and community members to convey support of the efforts of mental health.

The goal is for the flag to become a global symbol for supporting all mental health initiatives and all those affected by mental illness.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 5/13/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Unfortunately, due to our high numbers of new cases of late, we now have 0 counties in the "green-on-track" range, and 1 county back in the "red-critical" range. Now, our 7-day average incidence rate of new cases per 1000,000 chart is showing only 5 counties in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Russell, and Wayne; 4 counties in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread: Casey, McCreary, Pulaski, and Taylor; and 1 county in the "red-critical" range, Adair.

We are able, however, to report fewer new cases today than for the same time period last week so our districtwide 7-day-average-incidence rate of new cases per 100,000 went down slightly. There are still a high number of new cases per day in our district and this is not surprising since our COVID-19 vaccine uptake rate is lower than the state average in all 10 of our district's 10 counties. Our citizens need to take the vaccine, which is safe and very effective. Of our 18,110 new cases since the vaccine started becoming available, almost 99% of them had not taken any doses of the vaccine. The statistics are even better for those who have been fully vaccinated.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 3.04%.

Robinson Signs with Lindsey Wilson Men's Basketball

By Kyle Jackson

Connor Robinson is set to join the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team for the 2021-22 season, head coach Chris Starks announced on Friday.

Robinson is a 6'3 guard, four-year letterman from Clay County High School in Kentucky. He averaged 24 points per game in his senior year and finished in the top five of all-time scorers in Clay County High School history accumulating over 2,070 total points during his high school career.

"Connor is exactly what I was looking for in terms of building for the future with our freshman class," said Coach Starks. "Outside of him being a tremendous student in the classroom, he is a tough-nosed competitor and has a true passion to play the game that can really score the basketball in a variety of ways."

Parrott runs away with MSC Tournament Individual Championship

Bowling Green, KY - It was a strong day for the Campbellsville University women's golf team and an even stronger day for Gracie Parrott as Parrott earned the individual championship at the Mid-South Conference Tournament Friday afternoon, May 7, 2021.

The Lady Tigers shot their team low for the tournament with a 313 (+25) as that score was also the lowest team round of the final round, outshooting champions University of the Cumberlands by a stroke. CU finished in second place with a three-round total of 944 (+80) as the Patriots won the team championship with a 927 (+63).

The story was Parrott, who becomes the first Lady Tiger to earn the individual championship since Cassidy Scantland did so in her freshman year of 2013-14. Parrott, the daughter of Walt and Deana Coffey-Parrott, and the granddaughter of Adair County Magistrate, Billy D. Coffey, wrapped up the tournament with a three-round tournament total of 214 (-2) as the only player to shoot under par for the entire tournament.

AG warns of misleading claims about OTC hearing aids

By Elizabeth Kuhn

Frankfort, KY - During National Better Hearing and Speech Month, Attorney General Daniel Cameron issued a consumer alert warning Kentuckians of misleading claims about the safety and effectiveness of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid products. Some sellers of these products may claim their hearing aids are approved, registered, or cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"Kentuckians should carefully review claims made by over-the-counter hearing aid sellers," said Attorney General Cameron. "To avoid unnecessary health risks and financial loss, we encourage Kentuckians with a hearing loss to seek professional medical advice for appropriate hearing aid fitting."

Dishonest companies may attempt to sell inexpensive OTC devices, claiming these products have been approved by the FDA. While Congress has legalized the sale of OTC hearing aids and directed the FDA to pass safety regulations for these products, the FDA has not approved OTC hearing aids. Furthermore, many of these products are offered to consumers at reduced prices and include misleading money-back guarantees.

Properly-fitted, medical-grade hearing aids can assist the nearly 50 million Americans, including almost 700,000 Kentuckians, suffering from some degree of hearing loss.

Vaccines available to ages 12-15 starting Thursday

NOTE: Individuals who are fully vaccinated do not need to quarantine after an exposure to someone with COVID-19, which minimizes disruption to the individual and their family.

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced state vaccination sites can administer Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines to Kentuckians age 12 to 15 starting Thursday, May 13.

The Governor's announcement was made on the heels of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) emergency use authorization, which supports use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine among those 12 years of age and older, and subsequent approval for the usage among younger Americans from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

To see all vaccination sites and free transportation options to and from vaccination appointments, visit vaccine.ky.gov. To see a list of vaccination sites that have openings this week, visit vaccinemap.ky.gov. If Kentuckians have questions, they should call the state’s COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline, 855-598-2246 or TTY 855-326-4654 (for deaf or hard-of-hearing Kentuckians).

Carol Perkins: Families love the beach

Previous Column: Oh no, not again

By Carol Perkins

As my friend Connie and I sat in our rented beach chair, relaxing under the umbrella, loud voices approached. Two middle-aged men staked out a spot and parked their wagon. Their mother soon emerged. Dad, pushing through the sand with his prosthetic leg, had fallen behind, but by the time he arrived, the sons had set up his tailgating chair and Mama's beach chair. When I looked at their mother and the low beach chair, I sized up the situation. There was "no way" she could get in or out. (Been there!)

Mama was not a small woman. When she squeezed herself in the chair, it immediately sank. Her bottom imprinted the sand, and her knees were level with her waist. The boys then escorted their dad to his chair. He was trim and fit for his age but struggled to maneuver the sand with his prosthetic leg.

One thing I noticed about most vacationers is their lack of concern about appearance. One of the sons was noticeably confident.

Leaving Green, Heading West: Zion National Park, Utah

Click headline for photos. This album will grow as photos are added.

By Robert Ellis
Robert Ellis Woodworking

For the last year or so I had been watching some YouTube vids of a couple photographers Vlogging in Zion National Park. If you told me then, someday I would be going out there, I would have laughed. Well here I am... early April in Zion. Beauty galore is my response to anyone that inquires about this area. In fact, southern Utah with its several National and State Parks, is in my opinion, the most colorful, jaw dropping landscapes you'll ever see... I hope to go back!

My only complaint is we didn't spend enough time here, basically a fast, whirlwind tour of one small area, barely scratching the surface. You have to obtain (nearly impossible during peak season) tickets to ride the shuttle buses through the main canyon, so we drove another route to the top of the mountains

Zion, from what I've read, is becoming one of the most frequented spots to visit, ranking second or third in the Nation.

KSP and Special Olympics bring back Cover the Cruiser

By Sgt. Billy Gregory

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky State Police (KSP) once again is showing their support of Special Olympics Kentucky (SOKY) by hosting the 'Cover the Cruiser' fundraising event at locations across the commonwealth. Starting Monday, May 17, KSP will park cruisers at a variety of public locations* and encourages Kentuckians to cover the cruisers with custom SOKY stickers for a minimum donation of one dollar, which will go directly to SOKY.

"Special Olympics emulates what Team Kentucky is building each day," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "It focuses on what we as Kentuckians have in common while accepting our differences in support of building one another up so that we can reach our fullest potential. I commend this fundraising effort by KSP and encourage everyone to stop by the location nearest them and help Cover the Cruiser."

Fiscal Court report from Judge Executive Gale Cowan

By Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan

Adair County Fiscal Court met Tuesday, May 11, 2021 in regular session. It was a long meeting but we covered a lot of important matters. All of the normal agenda items were discussed and approved such as the Sheriff, Road Department, Animal Shelter, and Jail reports. Action items discussed were a follows:

1. KACo Representative Kelly Harding attending the meeting to discuss the health insurance renewal for county employees. The past several years, the county has offered 3 policies for employees to choose from. It was decided to go with just one HRA plan this year, which is a better plan than any offered in the past. The Fiscal Court also agreed to increase the amount the court pays per employee from $380 per month to $590 per month per employee. This will only leave approximately $25 per month that will be paid by the employee. This is a huge win for our county employees. It's like getting a $210 per month raise.

2. Judge Cowan advised the court that after the lease payment is paid on the 20th of this month, the Jim Blair Community Center/Park property will be paid in full.
