Free Soil Testing Program

By Nick Roy, Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources
Adair County Cooperative Extension Service

The Adair County Soil Conservation District will be sponsoring free soil testing for Adair County landowners from February 1st through April 15th. Landowners are eligible to submit up to six (6) samples for free testing through the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service.

When taking soil samples, remember that the results of a soil test are only as good as the sample itself. Samples should be taken at a depth of 3-4 inches for no-till production and 6-8 inches when the ground is to be tilled. Take at least 10 cores samples from smaller fields to compile one sample for the field. Larger fields may require as many as 30 core samples per field. Try to limit soil samples to 20 acres or less when possible. Avoid pulling core samples from drains, near roadways, around feeding areas, and where manure has been applied within the last month. The core samples should be placed into a plastic bucket or paper bag, mixed well, and dried.

For more information contact the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service at (270) 384-2317.

Letter: Thinks tax discussion should wait

By Jamison Roberts

For the tax discussion I believe the topic should be tabled for a later time. A lot of people are not as fortune as others due to the troubled times of us living in a pandemic.

Just because some people are fortunate enough to be able to swing a new tax it doesn't mean that everyone can. A lot of people have lost their jobs, and because of that they are either unemployed or have had to a different job that pays less than the previous one.

A new tax might be a viable possibility when everything is running normally and we're not smack dab in the middle of a pandemic. But until that time I believe we need to make do with the taxes and revenue we already have.

This is just my thoughts on the matter, --Jamison

By Christopher Coombs

McKenzie, TN - Josh Smith poured in a career-high 28 points in the Blue Raiders 80-77 Mid-South Conference win over Bethel (TN) on Thursday evening at Crisp Arena.

Following a strong first half from the Blue Raiders (5-11, 3-10 MSC), LWC added to their lead over the first eight minutes of the second frame to take a 58-50 lead with 12 minutes to play. Just three minutes later the Blue Raiders lead vanished with an 11-2 Bethel (9-10, 3-10 MSC) scoring spurt.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 1/28/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The Governor announced four new sites where vaccines for Phase 1a and 1b, including 70 and older, will be opening. More sites will be opening in the weeks to come. You may call 1-855-598-2246, or visit vaccine.ky.gov to find out if you are eligible and where you can receive the vaccine. Remember, supplies are still limited, it may take several weeks to secure an appointment.

Our new cases today were a little higher than last Thursday, thus our 7-day average incidence rate went up slightly. All counties in our district remain at the "red-critical" range of community spread. Until the vaccine is widely available, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.
