Governor announces website and hotline for vaccines

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the state, in partnership with Kroger Health, will open its first regional vaccination site at the Kentucky Horse Park in Fayette County next week. Three additional regional sites are opening through partners Ephraim McDowell Hospital in Danville and Western Baptist and Lourdes Mercy both in Paducah.

The Governor also unveiled a new state website, vaccine.ky.gov, and hotline that help Kentuckians determine if they are eligible to receive a vaccine and then helps them find one in their region.

Gov. Beshear stressed that Kentucky, like other states, receives its vaccine doses from the federal government and due to limited supplies it will take time before everyone can be vaccinated. But, he said, everyone will get a turn.

"Beginning Feb. 1, 2021, the COVID-19 vaccination priority will be phase 1B, people ages 70 or older, and all vaccination sites are asked to prioritize this population until further notice," Gov. Beshear said. "Other Kentuckians from phases 1A and 1B remain eligible for vaccination and as vaccine quantities and available appointment times allow, persons in phase 1C may also be scheduled, to ensure each vaccination site administers 90% or more of all vaccine doses received within seven days of arrival."

The three incoming freshmen that receive the scholarship are granted full tuition, room and board for their four years at Lindsey Wilson College. Trips to Hemingway's "Great American Cities", research projects and a multitude of other activities also encompass the Begley Scholar experience.

More than 70 high school seniors from various parts of Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina and Texas came to LWC's A.P. White Campus Saturday for the annual Scholars Day.

Among the students competing for the prestigious scholarship were Columbia residents:
  • Maggie Brummett
  • Kinley Darnell

  • Alondra Fuentes-Nava
  • Hayden Hancock (who attended virtually)

Letter: Wendy Burt comment on taxes in Adair

George Kolbenschlag writes:
You are absolutely correct, Wendy. We cannot expect to be well served by the city and county if we are unwilling to pay for it. I have lived a number of places, and Columbia and Adair do a good job of providing services, but we cannot expect "them" to pay for those services until we recognize that we are them.

Phillip Coffey - Blessed

BOY ARE WE BLESSED - By Phillip Coffey

Gabriel's blowing his trumpet - 'not with that hat'.
Go to your room - change all of your attire
But first get the comb - brush down the cat.
Lots of upgrading since I up and retired.

Vacant rooms - no children in our empty nest.
But so very happy with not much to do.
Quickly find my recliner - much needed rest.
Call from a Granddaughter - boy are we blessed.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 1/27/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The school vaccination clinics continue to go well. Today, Cumberland County was completed. Pulaski remains in progress and will for the next week and a half. All schools should be completed by the end of next week, or very early the following week. Then, it will be on to the 70 and older group. The Governor is supposed to announce tomorrow how the next push will unfold.

We are happy to report that the number of new cases today were fewer than the number of new cases last Wednesday. We are hopeful this is a sign we have at least plateaued. However, with the announcement of new, strains of COVID-19 that spread even faster having been found in Kentucky it is important we continue to observe the guidance. Until the vaccine is widely available, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces.
