Mother's Day - May 10, 2020

The world has turned many times since 1907, the year Anna Jarvis asked her Philadelphia church to hold services in memory of all mothers on the anniversary of her mother's death.

It was a time before the marvels of electricity and indoor plumbing. Mothers had a life of hard physical work.

Today, more than 113 years later, the role of mothers is somewhat different. Today moms have homes, kids, AND careers.

Letter: Call for Action

Comments re: ACSO: Cyclist airlifted from scene of accident

By Kellis Booth

My initial response is concern for Hannah. She's a dear friend and advocate for cycling safety. She once wrote me an impassioned letter urging me to require my daughters wear a helmet even in our own yard. She loves cycling and wants people to be able to enjoy outdoor activities.

That said, moving from concern for her recovery I begin to feel anger. This intersection is dangerous. In the last ten years there have been three serious accidents that I am aware of. Beyond those, as a cyclist commuting to town, I've been run off the road by unaware drivers. One even returned a look through the mirror which made me suspect the "accident" in the event.

Furthermore, there was a video circulating that showed just how well people respect that stop sign. All the above considered I now ask what more is needed to bring about change? Not only at this intersection but across our county it is dangerous to go out for a bike ride. With the lack of shoulders, speeding drivers who also engage their phone often, and countless blind curves it's a wonder that there haven't been more accidents.

Now is the time of year people are getting out to exercise, taking leisure rides and going for jogs. Will we as a community do anything to protect them? I applaud the mayor for increasing the sidewalks in town and I wish something similar could be done in the county. Not sidewalks but bike lanes is one thing. More caution signs warning drivers of precarious corners?

I wish I had a simple solution but I don't so I digress. I just pray this doesn't happen again. --Kellis

November 2, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the November 2, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. How tight is tight? Circuit Court Clerk Bill Ballou says you can say a fellow is tight when you can say of him, "He's so tight he turns his back to open a pack of chewing gum."

Do you know Nancy Luvena?
The former Nancy Luvena Gentry Simpson is a well known Columbian, but few would recognizer her by that name.

In fact, she is best known as Lula Bell Simpson.

How did it happen? Well, when Lula Bell was a little girl, they called her "Tom," because she was such a tomboy.

In school she was known as "Lou," short for Luvena.

After she married George Simpson, a pharmacist in town started calling George "Sonny," and his wife, "Lula Bell," after the characters in an old radio show called "Sonny and Lula Bell."

I never heard anyone call the late Sheriff George Simpson "Sonny." He must have lost the sobriquet quickly.

Twain remembers his mother, Jane Lampton Clemens

Today is a day for remembering Mothers. In Mark Twain's biography, he states this about his mom, Jane Lampton Clemens:

Fromy Vonnie Kolbenschlag

She never used large words, but she had a natural gift for making small ones do effective work. She lived to reach the neighborhood of ninety years and was capable with her tongue to the last - especially when a meanness or an injustice roused her spirit.

She has come handy to me several times in my books, where she figures as Tom Sawyer's Aunt Polly.

I fitted her out with a dialect and tried to think up other improvements for her, but did not find any.
