The Columbia Police are investigating what is believed to be related break-ins on Russell Road within the last seven days.

Beginning on April 6, 2020, a local business was the victim of a burglary while it was closed. On April 13, a neighboring business was again the target of one individual attempting to force entry before fleeing when a security alarm was triggered.

After observing camera footage, the subject appeared to have came from the vicinity of Carrie Bolin Drive and Hanley Lane on foot, walking behind the office buildings to avoid Russell Road.

If anyone has any information leading to identifying the party, please notify Columbia Police by Adair 911 or calling The Columbia Police Department directly at 270-384-4119.

T.J. Health Columbia adding tent to assist with triage

By Stacey Biggs

A tent is being erected in the parking lot at T.J. Health Columbia, adjacent to the Emergency Department. This is a proactive measure that is being taken in anticipation of a potential surge of patients seeking care for respiratory illnesses. It is not cause for alarm.

The Kentucky Hospital Association has recommended that all hospitals have a similar plan in place that can be implemented immediately should there be an influx of patients. This ensures that upon arrival, patients can be triaged at the point of entry, and those with respiratory symptoms and complaints can be separated from non-infectious patients.

The tent is being constructed today at T.J. Health Columbia, and it will be ready for operation if or when the need arises.

BofC assisting businesses filing for Paycheck Protection Program

By Andrea Waggener

The news of the passage of the CARES Act came as a relief to many local small businesses trying to find a way to stay afloat during the nationwide COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Small Business Administration application process can be overwhelming and multiple changes to the original program made it confusing for some individuals to be able to file confidently.

That's why Bank of Columbia has been dedicated to assisting business owners in filing applications for the SBA Payroll Protection Program. Bank of Columbia President Mark Dykes is hopeful that these businesses will be able to open their doors again when the crisis is over.

Bank of Columbia has disbursed over $3 million in SBA PPP funds (at the time of this release), with that total projected to hit $6 million by the end of next week. Those funds are almost exclusively loans to local businesses, which means the money stays here to help business owners continue paying their employees.

KSP: Dispatchers 'Pay It Forward' during Appreciation Week

By Sergeant Josh Lawson

Frankfort, KY - April 12-18 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, a time set aside to recognize the more than 200,000 individuals throughout the U.S. who play critical roles in the delivery of public safety services. Often called the "heroes behind the headsets," these men and women provide a lifeline to both citizens in need and officers in the field. They serve as an unseen, but vital link in keeping law enforcement officers and the public safe at all times day or night.

Kentucky State Police employs 180 telecommunicators at 16 posts throughout the state. In 2019, they answered 2.1 million calls resulting in 500,236 requests for assistance. In the past, businesses have donated food and services to show their appreciation to dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, but this year, dispatchers are paying it forward.
