Kentucky Human Rights Commission honors Nelson Mandela 'A giant of humanity . . . " By Victoria Stephens News from Kentucky Commission on Human Rights The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights today placed a wreath in remembrance of Nelson Mandela on the first floor of the Heyburn Building in Louisville, KY, at the corner of 4th and Broadway, where the commission's headquarters is located. John J. Johnson, executive director of the state human rights commission, said: "Nelson Mandela was a giant of humanity, a person who showed us all how to forgive and to reach out to others and to work for the common good of society. He was an inspiration to all humankind and very much to people who work in the human rights and justice movements. He refused to give in or give up; he continued to press toward a just and equal society even though he met with more confrontation, perhaps, than anyone in modern history. By his example, he leaves the legacy to all of us to try to do what is right even though we sometimes find it difficult. Sometimes it's easier just to walk away, and say, 'I don't have to fight that battle,' but Nelson Mandela resisted that and continued to seek justice for all people. His life will remain a beacon of hope to millions of people throughout the world." 2013-12-09 16:30:56 | Comments | Printable version

The Parade: Mother of 4-year-old would like to see more floats Jamie Isabelle writes: I took my son to the parade on Saturday night. It is nice that Columbia tries to do things like this for Adair County. The sad part was it was more like a car show than anything else. My son is 4 and started getting bored until the few floats came by and he enjoyed the lights on them. I just wished there were more participation in the floats. I understand they take money and work to build, but that is what make a parade in my opinion. Thanks. - Jamie isabelleComments re article 63859 Monday morning quarterback suggests 2 band Parade 2013-12-09 15:46:22 | Comments | Printable version

Wants help contacting Jason Harmon Naomi Miller McFall writes Is there a way for me to contact Jason Harmon? I've read his work on the Columbia Magazine website and have found it very interesting and informative. I was born in Adair County, as were my parents, however, we moved to Columbus, Indiana when I was a child. I've lived in Columbus since that time, but have visited Adair County throughout my life. I have Harmon, Denton, and Powell relatives buried at Bear Wallow Cemetery. Thanks: Jason Harmon is a remarkable talent, a very gifted writer. He hasn't posted to CM for quite some time, but his articles are still very popular. CM acts as a conduit, that is, contact information can be posted here, and in many situations, that provides the nexus to establish private conversations. I wish we had time to act as a go-between, transferring private messages, but that doesn't seem possible with the large number of posts we make each day. Those who wish to may post occasional news stream posts at no charge, and in addition, use the "CM Reunions" classification to post paid Queries for longer periods.
