Higher taxes and water bill Says he understands distrust and concerns if same people who put hospital in jeopardy are same ones who would regulate any taxes Stephen Collins writes: Ed, it has been my experience that most people would pay more if they see the value in the product or service. I ask the question what is the value of higher taxes, higher water bills etc. Where is the money going, how is it spent, and why should anyone pay higher anything without knowing the benefits of it. Last question: Are the same people that put the hospital in jeopardy the ones that will regulate the taxes? If that be the case, I fully understand the reason for all the distrust and concerns for peoples of Columbia - Stephen Collins 2012-08-09 17:19:38 | Comments | Printable version

Mr Reed's journal: Adair Co. has so much to be proud of Young men setting the bar: Chris Yates, Cameron Campbell, and Jordan Young Click on headline for story with photo By Sherry Stotts Mr. Waggener, Just thought I would share a little information on Chris Yates with you. I still stay in touch with both Chris and Cameron, and Chris was thoughtful enough to send me some very interesting photos taken recently during his internship in Washington, DC. The obvious one is of Chris and Ron Paul. The other is Chris and George Ayittey who is the leading authority on economic development in Africa. Chris tells me that he plans on using Mr. Ayittey's research and adding to it for his senior thesis. Another go-getter from Adair County is Jordan Young. Jordan is in a band called Mona, and they are really getting ready to hit it big, I think. You can download their album on itunes and Amazon, and if you like good rock, it's the ticket. Adair County has so much to be proud of, and these young men are setting the bar! - Sherry Stotts 2012-08-09 16:02:38 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Education

VFW Commander Joe Hare endorses ROTC program for ACHS By Joe Hare Personally I would love to see a ROTC at the high school and will do anything I can to help or promote it. I also will do all I can to encourage our VFW Post to assist as well. We have a lot of civic minded members that I feel sure will be right there to help. Mr Reed knows my number and where I live, all he has to do is let me know what we need to do. Let me say what a blessing this would be to see our young people involved in such a program, and promoting our country. On the hospital: Follow the money, people. Follow the money Comments from John Ford I invite you to move back and help pay the taxes that the previous administrators AND board members have saddled us with. We all agree that we need a hospital...the problem is how do we keep it and pay off the debts also. Most people here have already resigned themselves to the fact that they are going to be paying more taxes. when you add that to the doubling of our water bills and a slow economy I expect to start seeing businesses and people leaving for greener pastures. A handful of people benefitted from the rape of this community hospital. follow the money people, follow the money - John FordOne note from Ed Waggener We're sure Mr. Ford must be utilizing hyperbole to make a point in using the phrase, " . . . the doubling of our water bills." Here on my planet, there was a small increase in water rates, but absolutely, positively, no "doubling." -ED 2012-08-09 13:13:50 | Comments | Printable version

Guest Editorial: The County Needs a Hospital - Now and Forever I am no genius but I am smart enough to know that this is a "no-brainer". The county needs a hospital now and forever, so quit choosing sides and get down to saving it. Adair Co. is a progressive county and not having a hospital will set it back a century or two. - JOHNNIETTA JESSIE By Johnnietta Jessie A guest and CM endorsed commentary I grew up in southern Adair County and lived there for eleven years after my children were born. There has been a hospital in the county for as long as I can remember and I am 54 years old. The big questions are: - What are the elected officials willing to do to keep a hospital, and -The reasons Adair Co. needs a hospital need to be spelled out completely. It's a critical economic development factor When a business or manufacturing company looks at an area to expand to, they look at many different things before making their decision. The infra-structure (water, sewer, roads, electric, fire and police protection, garbage, and the stability of local government) of the city is examined to see if it will meet their needs. Next, school systems, medical care, housing are looked at, with entertainment and shopping being examined also. Adair Co. has made great strides in improving these things and will continue (I am sure) to improve as much as possible. So a hospital is critical to enticing new employers to this area. Minutes save lives As a former EMT, I know very well the most important reason a hospital is needed. Most people know the first minutes after a serious accident or illness are very critical in the recovery of the patient. While Adair Co. has an outstanding ambulance service, there is only so much they can do. The paramedics and emergency medical technicians are the first line of defense but a hospital is the next and then specialized care. If patients have to be transported many miles away for stabilizing care, their recovery chances go down. Every avenue needs to be explored Every avenue needs to be explored thoroughly and the citizens of the county need to know what is going on every step of the way because of the tremendous impact this has on everyone now and in the future. Each and every citizen in the county needs to stop and think about how this hospital has had a role in their lives, the lives of loved ones, or someone close. Daily life is harder right now and money has to be made to go farther but if taxation is the only way to save the hospital or needs to supplement the saving of it, then the elected officials with input from citizens need to decide how much the people can stand to pay. This is a "no brainer I am no genius but I am smart enough to know that this is a "no-brainer". The county needs a hospital now and forever, so quit choosing sides and get down to saving it. Adair Co. is a progressive county and not having a hospital will set it back a century or two. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN! I do not live in Adair Co. anymore but I still have lots of family there and many friends and I still think of myself as an Adair Countian. --Johnnietta Jessie 2012-08-09 08:57:12 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
Supt. Reed explains why at first, at least, it will be an Army ROTC Superintendent Alan W. Reed responds to George Kolbenschlag comments Thank you, George, for recognizing that a well-run ROTC program, with its color guard, would bring instant pride to our students, eighth-grade through high school, and to our school district and community. As for Navy v. Army, the choice was apparent when I discovered that we already have an "Army Club" at ACHS with roughly a hundred members! I believe an ROTC program would help lower a drop-out rate that is currently unacceptable, and could decrease discipline issues significantly. Great hear your comments George. Surely Joe Hare has something he'd like to add to this topic of discussion! --Alan W. Do we need a hospital or a HOSPITAL? By Jon Halsey Personal opinion of the writer I can't shake the uneasy feeling that we haven't learned a thing from the recent and disastrous missteps. Most folks who when realizing that they need a vehicle will sit down, take a deep breath and decide what their NEEDS are and then try to find a vehicle that will best meet those needs. Utility, price and upkeep are usually at the top of the list. Color, style and keeping up with the neighbors may have the most emotional pull but eventually lose out to sound decisions. Unfortunately, I don't see or hear any discussion concerning what would best serve the community other than "OMG - We have to have a hospital!" Of course we do. But please let's use this opportunity to get input from Doctors and Health Care officials, who DO NOT have a vested interest in outcome, as to what type of facility would best serve our community today and in the realistic next 20 years or so. We can then and only then begin to create a plan to make it happen. The overly emotional knee-jerk reactions is part of the reason we are where we are today. - Jon Halsey 2012-08-09 04:41:18 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
