Birdie went missing in thunderstorm - please help
2025-09-06 - Columbia, KY - Photo from Amy Pike. Our little dog, Birdie, ran off Friday night. She was let out to potty and jumped the fenced area. She's terrified of any kind of weather. If you live on Pickett, Greensburg, Lee, Streets, in the public schools area, or anywhere in Columbia, please check your porches or under your vehicles. She could be scared and hiding anywhere. Birdie is extremely friendly but can be hard of hearing at times. We're not sure which direction she may have gone. If you spot her, please call Misty, 270-634-1520, Amy 270-634-3616 or Audreanna at 270-634-2234.

Birds of Kentucky: Killdeer
2025-09-05 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen. A Killdeer on a close fly-by. All About Birds says of them, "The Killdeer's broken-wing act leads predators away from a nest, but doesn't keep cows or horses from stepping on eggs. To guard against large hoofed animals, the Killdeer uses a quite different display, fluffing itself up, displaying its tail over its head, and running at the beast to attempt to make it change its path."

Volunteers guide visitors through WCD story
2025-09-04 - Russell County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Just one of many displays in the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery welcome area. Volunteers are always welcome to help host visitors. This display says, "Lake Cumberland stretches 100 miles behind the Wolf Creek Dam. The result of Lake Cumberland being formed was the addition of 55,000 acres of newly formed water. Lake Cumberland consists of 3 layers of water behind the dam. The top layer is the Flood Control Pool. The second layer is the Power Pool. The third and final layer is the Conservation Pool."

Downtown Glens Fork without the General Store
2025-09-04 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Downtown Glens Fork is a lonely place without activities at the unique country store, "Hardscratch General Store," which was severely damaged in August when a single-vehicle wreck happened right on their doorstep. 20-year-old Alex James Tidwell lost control of his vehicle and it flipped on its side. Authorities say slick road conditions from rainfall likely caused the wreck. The owners are Tim and Sherry Kelly.

History and preservation offered at Wolf Creek
2025-09-04 - Russell County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, completed in 1975, was established to mitigate for habitat changes that resulted from the construction of many federal dams throughout the Southeast. Native populations of warm water fishes such as bluegill, smallmouth bass, and catfish, used to thrive in these streams. After construction of the dams, the habitat was changed to a cold water fishery. The Russell County hatchery raises over 1,000,000 brook trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, and rainbow trout each year, which thrive in cold water.
